Hello all,

I am still a beginner to this and am desperately looking for advice. Please see attached image, I am looking to do an animation of letters growing out of rows. I’ve tried to make this work with shader effectors and cloth tags but I don’t think it’s working.

Thanks in advance!

E

Hi E,

Here are an example and a short screen capture:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/Cz9yUdyhQovlNKkjW2bAKrS7sXFMhhvb25q3YNIhENt

The “Cube” could have more polygons, for finer edges, etc.

If you have any questions, please never hesitate to ask, I’m happy to look into it.

Thanks for sending the image to my dropbox, very much appreciated.

Cheers

AMAZING. It is exactly what I was going for. I need to study the file more closely but I do understand the solution overall. I would not have thought of blurring the letter!

Many many thanks, I will be able to get some sleep finally.

You’re very welcome, E., thanks for the reply.

Typically it is about information flow. Blurring the letter provided the information needed. I know you got that already, but since I write in a forum, it might be OK to stress that point.

Enjoy exploring it and adapting the technique to your needs. For any follow-up questions, I’m just a few clicks away.

ENJOY.

Dr. Sassi,

Thanks again, it’s such an elegant solution! I was struggling with fields and effectors and on and on.

Question: I see how the “R” is loaded into the displacer, but why is it also loaded into the cloner’s luminance channel?

Thanks, E, for the question.

The R is placed on the cloner to position the image information in the way it is needed. So one can adjust it interactively. Sometimes I use a Plane object for that, while the Plane object has the size of my intended size of the texture. I find that more intuitive and comfortable. The Plane can be invisible (but active) to provide this data.

The X in the Selection is used to shut the Material off for this object. Since there is no selection called X. I used this since ever. Delete the X, and the Image/Material is visible on the object. If it is on the Displacer, one can’t see it as an image. The X doesn’t stop the flow to the Displacer.

(To have that Material Tag (formerly know as Texture Tag) on the object allows me to know its use even after a long time.)

With that being set up, I can use this Material Tag in the Displacer Deformer and select which channel I like to use.

Is there an one and only or THE right way to do it? No. I like to suggest exploring all options and stick with what makes the most sense to you. The more routine you get, and things that become a standard, the more your energy can go into creating, rather than organizing.
The downside is, you get less “happy accidents”.

My best wishes.

Hi Dr. Sassi,

Attempting to rebuild your file. How do I get the “R” image to appear on the top of the cloner rather than the front face? thanks!

edit: Sorry I seem to be unable to attach my screenshot

Hi E.,

Images for the forum can’t be larger than 800 wide and 600 high. JPG preferably.

Sorry for the delay, but I had, at one point, to go through our company’s data security training.

Here is a screen capture: (You can download these one-minute clips.)

My tip, use a plane or any other object and explore the projection methods. It is a"must-know” item for Cinema 4D users.
Let me know if there is any question, as usual, I’m happy to look into it.

GOT IT. I see, this is great. I’ll be sure to get into the projection methods as well. Thanks again!
