Hello Sassi,

I have a simpler question compared with the more recent geometrical posts of late smile

As you can see from the screenshot I have created two spheres and made them intersect each other. When you view in X-Ray mode you can see the intersecting geometry on the inside of the shape - which is expected.

I want to join/connect the two spheres together as if this is an original object in itself. I know you can use the Boolean effect set to A union B and which joins the spheres and removes the internal geometry. But then I here from other C4D users that say to avoid using booles for anything. Is this true?

Please can you confirm if using boolean with the union mode is the best way to “merge” the two sphere together while removing all internal intersecting geometry? What is the “best practice” in this scenario?

Hi David,

I would typically be skeptical about a general statement. (Yes, I notice the irony in my statement, but even there, be skeptical wink )

In case of the spheres, if you keep them in line, axis wise, and the same size, etc., each polygon/edge will be like a symmetrical/mirrored set up: which creates for two spheres just a nice result. See scene file.

There are limitations, and keep in mind that (a) the Phong tag smoothes the surface, and (b) the Boole will see only the flat polygon. (There is the collision of two worlds.) Perhaps that polygon is not even flat, and then the new edges will certainly not show up as the phong algorithm made believe the surface is.

In any case, try, and test different settings. Sometimes other approaches might be better. Hence, why modeling in my book is a job in its own rights, and not just a bag of tricks and done.

Yes, of course, I wanted to showcase your question. Again, general statements have a certain quality.

Perhaps, the Volume option in R20 will allow for a much faster and yet complex combination of objects. It is based on a ver fine mesh and some smoothing: In that way a direct comparison with Boole operations can be done to a certain degree.
