Selections of part of geometry for texturing

Hello

I’m working on a project where I have to isolate certain parts of a geometry to “map” content.  In this case, I have a sort of front “net” like structure in front of a flat wall.  I need to fill the “holes” in the front section with content, that will be projected on the wall.
I was wondering if I could somehow create a UV setup that would facilitate that?  The other option would be to render the front structure as a mask and then create content in After Effects using that matte, but that would be less flexible for texturing inside C4d.  Ideally I would have polygon selections or UV selections that would give me each projectable “piece” as a selection.
Maybe I could boole one structure in the other?

Here is the project

Thanks!

Hi Alex,

Why not have this Front structure just black? In the moment it becomes projected on the real wall, black has no influence.

I assume that the render camera takes the place of the Projector, so the shadow that the structure causes will be backed already.

Another option would be to fill the holes (of the front Object) with polygons and via selections limit the area of texture visibility.

One more option could be to set the front structure to transparent, no reflections, no specular, and have the background equipped with a Compositing Tag> seen but transparency [not checked]. There is a large polygon inside of the structure, that needs to go for this.

There are certainly other options, just let me know if I missed something.

All the best

P.S.:

I created a spline from the Front-holes, cleaned it up, and created a proper UV for it on a polygon object.

I hope that works for your project.

Hey Sassi

I think the second link you sent is the same as the first one?

One question though…What would be an easy way to have this as a texture layout?  If I want to bring this in AE and put some elements there, then bring it back into C4d and have the texture line up?  I suppose I could do a flat projection with the transparency technique and then render that out?

Hi Alex,

The link is fixed.

How about Cineware?

Of course!  Great idea!

What was your technique to fill in the holes?  Polygon Pen?

Thanks!!

Alex,

I went to the side view of the front element and with a rectangular selection (set to off for both: visible only and tolerant) I selected the edges. The second row of edges, not the first one.
With this selection, I went to Mesh>Commands> Edge to Spline. It needed the Close Edge option on in the Spline attributes.
In point mode, I deleted some points of “none holes” and when they where too close or intersecting. Typical clean up stuff.
The outer rectangle around this spline was also deleted. The result could be used in the Extrude or in other options.
.

With the “Current State To Object”, I got a polygon copy, from which I took only the front cap, which was set to Quads in the Extrude.
.

I used a Flat projection for these polygons and turned it into UVs. I checked it in the UV Editor.
.

That’s all.

Hey Sassi

Thanks for the explanation.  Can you explain a bit more how you selected the second row of edges?  Do you mean the back face?  Everything else is pretty clear!

Thanks!

Ah I think I see what you mean, the layer of edges closer to the “plane” in the center.
I got this far, but now I’m having a problem with the extrusion

What do you think I did wrong?

Thanks!

Hi Alex,

Please have a look at the files below:

https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/18zAJoxois3HLVeyggqQFuXTHA52Jxs6COj61FYSLi4

The screen shot shows the selection area from your file, I recreated it, but I guess you see where I used to take it from, incl. the Selection settings.

I have screen captured the process of “cleaning” up the spline, the file that I used is the one you just shared. I placed only your name in front of it, otherwise it would be lost in my download folder for CV.

All points that are not needed where deleted. and some would even lead to corrupted polygons later on.

Let me know if you have any questions.

All the best

Great, that all helps a lot.  Thanks!  Got it to work.

Thanks again for taking the time to do screen recordings and everything

Have a great end of the weekend!

You’re very welcome, Alex, thanks for the feedback.

An alternative would be to use CV-ArtSmart to copy the Spline and open it in Illustrator. Once it is in Illustrator, it can be copied to Ae and Ps as path/mask.
