NLA stands for non-linear animation, an alternative way of working with animation using layers of animation and clips to easy manipulate larger amounts of animation quickly and easily. Motions clips allow you to create libraries of motions and then combine them to create complex animations with ease in a workflow similar to what you would find in a video editing application, working with clips of animation for entire hierarchies instead of individuals keys and tracks on multiple objects.
