Weight maps to selected points?

I am rigging a pig character and quite like the weighting options in Cinema. My one problem is weighting the lower jaw. Whenever I paint, it inevitably paints part of the upper mouth also. What I’d like to do is just select the bottom jaw points, and assign all selected points to a jaw weight map (and none of the other). Is this possible? Seems it can only be painted.

Also, is it possible to have a set of bones control one larger weight map? For instance, can I have the spine control one generic mid torso weight?

Hi psussi,

Please have a look here:

When you have several questions, please separate those; otherwise, the forum is harder to read. Even a single thread with mixed questions can be an effort to follow. Thanks for considering.

Anyway, since you ask. Any point of the character mesh should have an absolute and exact weight of 100%. If that is not a given, then any movement is not perfect. The 100% of one or a larger group of points can be weighted to 100% based on the relation of one single Joint. Typically a point is weighted with one to three joints. Yes, it can be more, but that might not be supported later on in another application.

All the best

Thank you for your reply, but not sure it answered my question.

I totally understand weights from other programs I’ve used. My question is, is a brush the only way to apply / paint weights? Because I am having a problem isolating weights in areas with concentrated points, like the lower and upper parts of a snout. I wanted to select the points of the lower jaw, and is there some sort of menus or button that would allow me to select those points to be to 100% jaw weight? Even if there was an option to just paint on “selected points”? Again, if I paint with the brush, it’s hard to isolate it to certain set of points….make sense?

I’ll respond to my other question in a new thread.

Hi psussi,

The Weight Manager has an option to apply weight to selected points of objects.
In this series that I mentioned, Bret shows in detail how to do it.
https://www.cineversity.com/forums/viewthread/4901/

Here for example
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaylist/weight_painting/weight_painting_part_2
at 05:30, I would have no idea what I could do better than Bret to showcase this.
I will try, of course, with this little clip for you:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/NRLqFl6DmUBNjNa8TxytLyezCeVTuoamCmkl0v0wp2Q

While the shift-key is pressed, a double click on the Weigh-Tag will open the Weight-Manager.
Go to the Tab> Weight. Select a Joint, select point on the object and drag the slider to the value you like to have, then let go of the slider.

All the best
