Polygon/Material/Selection, select by material, select by selection…

Hello, I have a question about selecting in Cinema4D: for example I want to select a polygon, and select the material belonging to it, or I click on a selection tag and want the material selected automagically, also I wanna select a polygon and want for example to select all the other polies that share the same selection tag, or select a material and with one lick select all the polies that share this material….Its a bit tedious to have to hover over every selection tag to read its name and then decide if its the one You want to select or the next, or maybe I am using the wrong workflow ?

Thanks,

Emmanuel

Hi Emmanuel,

You described already how it is done, activate a Selection Tag and check in the Attribute Manager the next option.

Your idea, which is certainly an advantage in speed, has a similar option in the viewport, but for object selection only (see image). Not what you asked for, I know.
In the viewport, position the mouse pointer over the object you want to select. Shift+right-click (Windows) or Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+click (Mac OS) to open a selection window containing all objects hit by the selection ray. Choose the object that you want to select.
I mention it here, as it might help to get a suggestion in a faster way across, just a thought.

To start from a model and have then, perhaps with a RMC (right mouse click) fly out menu all connected Tags and Materials is not possible to my knowledge, as in the example above.

Certainly a good idea if that is something your workflow needs. My impression is, that the information “Tags” are storing, already a partially duplication of the model itself in most cases. To have the same amount of data available for a each polygon, it might perhaps slow down the scene drastically, or at least would blow up the amount of data of a scene in a critical way.

The only option I can give you here is again the support (just in case I miss something) or directly to suggest this to MAXON.

The way I do it, is not going from the Editor View or the Object Manager, I go from the Material Manager and there in “Functions” for example, or in the Material Editor>Assignment (RMC).

Yes, the selections nor the polygons are in teh tools mentioned, it is always a Material and Object relation that is managed.

All the best

I checked this source of course (link below), as this feels like a great idea for a plug-in. As usual, I think some ideas are just in the “air’ and maybe caught by others as well. Perhaps I missed it in the list.

The correct number of plug-ins available are certainly more in the four than in the three digit rage. Difficult to get a grip on all of these. (But would be nice, some are really outstanding!) Given that huge number, I feel always uncertain what is available and what not.

My best wishes.
