I’m trying to create a sort of armor for an object that deconstruct along time. I tried with SweepNurbs but I’m not sure if is the best way, especially because I want to recreate this kind of interlaced structure. Any suggestions? I attach the C4D file and pic example of interlaced structure.

Hi iaec,

Perhaps something similar to the file that I had shared a while ago:
http://old.cineversity.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2720&PN=1&TPN=6
Switch the top Bend Deformer to off, something has changed.

In other words, I try create a simple animation which allows me to harvest then the Spline to get that specific structure.

Perhaps you take a MoSpline, so you get one path (or Spline) and with that, you are able to get the needed copies. With MoSplines—there is so much more possible.

Let me know if I miss something.

All the best

P.S.: ;o)

This is perhaps as simple as complex—at the same time.

I used only one Plain Effector here, for simplicity, but for more control, use several.

The Falloff of the Plain Effector with the “Modify Clone” is the key for the animation.

The main information source is the Formula Spline, set the value 20 in Y(t) to 50 and the “waves” will be 50.
The X(t) value of 100 is the same as in the Cloner Object, but as I use two Cloners it is 2*100 of course for each.
With the Formula.Samples, you adjust the amount of points on the resulting Spline, and with that, the quality but also the amount of profile points multiplied with the spline!
(Please explore the file—then it might not sound that cryptic.)

Let me know if there is a question. Your example image is two under and two above, but you get the idea.

Enjoy

The other example image, with the straight hard structure and the soft inter-weave: Have a look to the file. It builds up based on points/Tracer, press play.

The key here is to count the straight parts, plus the spaces between, to set scale points in the Sweep Object. Here 19+18. So, set the Spline Preset>Custom (RMC into the field). There the Y=f(X)=0.5 and the “Control Points” to 37.
Then use the RMC—Show in Separate Window, to have an easy time selecting every second one and set a new value for those.
The points of the Square Spline will allow for a nice shape in conjunction with the Subdivision Surface.

Have fun.

One minute clip, explaining the “scale” set up in the Sweep. Note the scale option will not work with “building up the structure”.

An alternative, but I’m not certain how to get some animation into it other than Min/Max, NitroFit [Plug-In!]. Perhaps with PolyFX? (See zip file/preview)
Just brainstorming here.

Wow! I’m really impressed Dr. Sassi, you always get to the point. Thanks for the advice, I’m studying your files to obtain knowledge. Here I share a video with the step by step. Please check and if there’s something to improve let me know. I’m going to experiment with this.

Thank you very much for your very nice feedback, iaec!

The idea of the “scale” isn’t working with animation, as it applies always to the complete Sweep Result at that given moment, hence the wiggling. Nice idea to send a short movie back. :o)

However, even that can be animated to a certain degree. While “weaving” the material will adjust to the new situation and on the end it gets in shape (wishful thinking here or one option is on you to decide). The Spline Warp has the differentiation in Spline length and in current result length, there it would work, but perhaps a lot of set up.

I have attached a sketch from you clip. The orange dots are the areas where the material needs to be squeezed, the dark blue dots where it an expand. In my case above it was 19+18, in this case the total would be 28 at frame 69 and perhaps it should be already 29 already, I can see a little bit of development already. The total amount of “cycles” or rations is the key here of course. :o)
(It could be done with roughly half of these points, but it is so much more tricky to set the curves up.)

For each full rotation we need four: full up, full below, and two intersect areas, then the next. Or for one cycle five if it would stop then. In other words full rotations times four, result of that plus one. I hope that makes sense.

Have a great weekend

P.S.: unrelated to this example, but to your question—The first image you shared reminded me a little bit on the “L-System” in C4D. MoSpline> Turtle.

In this idea, I explored the idea of having a single element that is growing and weaves a larger structure.
In the structure you might like to use, there is a repetition and this defines the smallest needed element. Like tiling of a textures.

The two groups under the Cloner Object blends between 0% and 100% grow of the Sweep. With the top Cloner Object the structure is repeated. The Plain Effector “Modifies the Clones”.

Perhaps another option. I made it more “readable with the rough “sketch-like” aesthetic.

The nice thing of this one is given in the Fact that the Scale adjustments (Details>Spline Interface) are stable during grow in this way.

Enjoy
