RS Area Light - Affects Specular?

Hello,
I am taking a tutorial for Cinema 4D using RedShift which was created in a much older version. In the tutorial, I am directed to go to the Ray tab (on a RS area light) and uncheck “Affects Specular”. I can’t seem to find either the tab nor this specular option. Any guidance on where I might be able to find such a selection? I tried a compositing tag, but I am thinking that there are no compositing tags for redshift lights… but I could be wrong. I am brand new to RedShift.

I appreciate any help you might have.
Thank you.

Hi anna.pinkgirl,

In my mind, Specular as a single “parameter” was more of a fake in the old days (non-RS render), so I ignored it in RS from the start. It was in the Contribution list, if I’m not mistaken.
It is, however, presented, for example, in the car shader description:
https://help.maxon.net/r3d/cinema/en-us/index.html#html/Car+Paint.html#CarPaint-BaseLayerSpecular

Anyway, I got uncertain, not knowing your version nor the tutorial you use –– I had to ask, as I love first-hand information, and Saul answered:

The old specular was both refraction and specular. In contribution, it is now better in that it is now split up between “reflection” for the direct specular and transmission for the refraction contribution.

I hope that helps

Cheers

Thank you. I will look at some settings and see what I can find. Thank you.
Just for your info, I am running the latest version of C4D and Redshift. The tutorial is from HelloLuxx. I don’t know what version they did the tutorial on, but it’s from a while ago for sure.

Thanks again. I appreciate your help.

Hi Anna,

Thanks for the reply. HelloLuxx produces and distributes excellent material, no question. I have learned from HelloLuxx Redshift 3D material a lot as well. I loved the idea of the Essential Material pack.

But yes, going by the “Turbo-speed” that the team at Redshift 3D constantly shows with new options, it is not easy to keep things up-to-date. I have from other sources RS training here, and one has already delivered their third addendum to it. I watch tutorials for a living, and after 8000 of them, I think I’m allowed to say some good things about great material here.

The question is, of course, how to keep up with all of this. All training has value, even understanding the change and development over time. New things are often discussed on our Ask The Trainer show, typically twice a month, or check out specific Redshift 3D series on the same channel.

Besides, have a look from time to time here:

And, of course, ask. grin If I don’t know a part, I can always ask people from Redshift 3D directly, as some people have called this forum a Wiki; I like to continue building this.

In a nutshell, we all learn constantly, and the most significant challenge these days is finding great sources.

Enjoy your weekend
