Toon Rig Scaling issues

Hi there,

New day, new rig problem to solve, I’m so close lol…

So the issue I’m having is that when I tested and compared the limb scaling abilities to Toon rig Characters content browser, my characters limbs are not scaling at all. I have toggled on the “Soft_IK_enable_” and “Enable_Scale_Controls_” in character object under the control tab as instructed in the tutorial to initiate the scaling abilities. Still the Geometry seems to not be sticking to the controllers at all. I’m wonder if it might be due to the weighting of the character,  which I can fix, but I’m not sure. Please take a look at the file link below if you have time.

I have too mention, I messed up the alignment of the legs on this rig.
I’m aware you shouldn’t rotate the leg joints separate of each other… but without thinking, I did this to align the foot controllers with the feet, smh lol. (when I switch from FK-IK on the legs they will twist out of control)

I have a vague understanding that after binding a character, its not recommended to go back to the early stages of the character object, (not a hundred percent sure).I’m willing to rebuild the rig and keep the initial alignment of the joints, but at this stage is there anyway to correct the twisting issue?...hmm does that have any correlation to my scaling issue?

Hi David,

Thanks for the file.

When I open a file from you, I get an alert if I like to update the characters. You know that you are not on the latest version of R23?

I have one favor to ask: if you have a question directly related to a tutorial, use the help button below the tutorial. Any other questions not directly related to the tutorial’s content or function, please use the Q&A forum. Thanks a lot.

Your rig works for scaling just fine.

If you need to scale, go to the Object mode. In model mode, the scale will be applied to the controller points and NOT to the axis. With this, the scale information seems to work on the controller but will naturally have no further effect anywhere.

In T or A pose, the one used to bind the rig, switch off the Skin Object. Then go into the adjust mode, adjust what you need. Then set the Pose in the Weight tag. After that is done, switch on the skin object. Please do this a couple of times with a copy until the muscle memory kicks in.

All the best

Ahh such a simple solution! I had combed through the entire character object hierarchy looking for a solution and nothing… I need coffee lol, thanks.

Noted, I thought I asked through the help button, I will make sure to ask in correct place next time.

Thanks for taking a look!

Best,
David

Hi David,

RIG
Yes, it is difficult to see, as the controller scales in both cases. Since that is one of the critical things to do, I wish the tutorial would have stressed this more. In my hands-on training, I have seen only a few people who are very clear about the difference between Model and Object. Thought, it is so crucial.

Tutorial Forum
The setup with the help option is that it uses the tutorial’s exact name, and if later someone else clicks on help, s/he comes directly to that specific thread. If it is set up manually, that option is not given, and the Tutorial forum is less useful.

My best wishes

P.S.: Since I believe that it is easy to run into this (scaling the controller with no response of the Toon Rig), I wanted to share this one-minute clip (#1175) with everyone.

This clip explicitly targets the use of scale while adjusting a controller of the toon rig. But once this is part of your muscle memory, it will not bother you again.

Thanks a lot, David.

I hope that the 60 seconds will help to avoid wasting time in the long run.

Very nice of you to take the time, very much appreciated.

Have a great evening.
