Cloning Objects Onto Specific Parts of Geometry

Hi Doc -

I’m working on a still image and trying to figure out the easiest way to clone objects (grasses, flowers, ivy, etc. from the Megascans Library) onto not just objects, but specific parts of objects.  In other words, it would be great if there were a way to paint selections onto the surface of objects and use those selections (or something easy like them) to tell the Cloner specifically where I want the grasses and other objects cloned.

Is there a way to do this?  If so, can you please explain or point me to a tutorial that illustrates this process?

Thank you very much!

Hi Mark,

Please have a look at these three files.
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/EkG2qJ8dNNaUrMmunpt7QXWQL4blq4ZKW8dpjTm01uX

The first one works with polygon selections (there is a field in the Cloner for Selections), the second one with a Polygon Pen, while the Snapping is set to 3D and polygon, and the third one works with projections or perhaps like the second, but with a Spline.

Not to make advertisement here, but this seems to fit so well, that I should share this here:
https://nitro4d.com/product/nitrodraw/

Let me know if that works for you, and if there is a question to one or the other file, I will share more details.

All three MoGraph options have different options on how to distribute the Clones later on. If you have very dense meshes as clones, use a simple proxy model, if you like to paint interactively.

My best wishes and stay safe, stay healthy!

You’re very welcome, Mark, thanks for the reply.

One little screen capture with the Polygon Pen:

Please have a look at this as well, based on Donovan’s idea

I have recorded a short session without the plugin, just manually, so you know what does what.

Let me know if there is any question. I’m happy to look into it.

ENJOY.

Thanks, Doc.  Can’t wait to check all of this out!  If I get stuck, I’ll be back in touch.  In the meantime, please take good care of yourself.

Thanks as well for the reply, Mark.

Each method has some features that are better than the other. The Hair set up is easy to paint with, quite comfortable. But I found the polygon based method more friendly for adjustments.

Yes, please never hesitate to ask.

Doc, you’re a genius!  I opened the very first of your examples this morning and it immediately solved my problem.  Thank you so much for your help!
