Control Activation of the Growth Propagation Effect?

Hi,

I have a scene (made from this tutorial).
It works but the problem is it activates immediately at the moment I created the freeze.

I want the growth propagation to happen when the spherical field is near the object it affects.

You can see the illustration file here:

Is there a way around this?

Thank you for looking at my problem.

Hi bentraje,

Please have a look at this setup.

To start this Growth with the Sphere Filed, the Blend Mode of the Sphere should be set to Max. I would place it always on top of the Freeze, for a better reading of the setup.
Sometimes, after the initial preparation, it might be needed to use the Clear button of the Freeze, so it works as the last state of the set up is meant to be.

Hi Dr. Sassi,

Your suggestion works as expected.
I get the idea of reordering and clearing the freeze but the setting the blend mode to “Max” is somewhat arbitrary.
I guess I need to brush up on Volume Related tutorials.

Thanks again!

You’re very welcome, bentraje, thanks for the reply.

(BTW, I feel always weird to write a name, not starting with a capital letter, but I go with the avatar name as long as no other name is given in the post)

If you are familiar with Photoshop’s blend modes, that is pretty much the same. The Mode Normal, tells me that there is no interaction with others. BUT: the Freeze Layer takes it anyway, so that introduces some confusion. I try to overcome this by keeping the Freeze like a background layer. (BTW, many years ago, I have created a series about Blend modes here on Cineversity, as I found that flipping through them, instead of knowing them, felt not really pro to me, but back then that information was kind of hidden.)

I would do this setup today in a different way, as we have the option of using Fields now in the Weight Tag. This keeps the information separate. With that, it can be used many times, instead of building it up over and over again, in the Falloff for example.

RE: name
You can just tag me as Ben for your convenience

RE: Blend Modes
I am acquianted by the blend modes but there is no “Max” mode in photoshop. That’s why I didn’t get the set-up immediately.

RE: using Fields now in the Weight Tag.
Interesting. I didn’t know about the Mograph Weight Tag. Only the Mograph Selection Tag.
I see that you “drag” the weightmap to another weight map with invert. That’s a handy set-up.

You’re very welcome, Ben.

Yes, I’m very fond of the MoGraph Weight tag, as it was my idea to have it. With other even more ingenious ideas to paint on such, it is so versatile.

The use of a Weight tag in another Tag helps to avoid flickering, as the Invert would write to the freeze tag and in the next frame, invert that again. Perhaps at one point a needed effect even, but mostly it is better to split it.

Have a great day
