Hi thanulee,

I thought the sequence in the CV Smart Export would do it, but each file contained the whole animation. I have no idea how to export a whole scene in single Alembic files with no animation. Note that an animation split in single frozen frames will not provide all the information needed for motion blur for example.
You didn’t mention the reasons why you need this, so please bear with me: The idea of Alembic as a one file options is at the same time its strength, as typically only the needed parts are loaded. There lays the huge advantage of the development that Sony and ILM have done

All the best

Thanks Dr. Sassi. No problem just wondering. Reason behind this, someone told me that abc small files load faster in rendering (i use octane) vs a big single file. Octane kinda struggles with big alembics and loads em each frame ending up with loading taking so much more time compared to actual rendering. Btw i didnt know that each frame alembics dont carry motion blur. Thanks

Hi thanullee,

Please check with the Octane support for this. For me, the main strength of Alembic is, that the application loads only what is needed for a given frame (sub-frame, etc.). Whoever told you otherwise might need to check the source of information. Perhaps s/he is right, and Octane has it wrong, but I highly doubt it.
Please compare Steve Wright, “Digital Compositing for Film and Video” fourth edition, page 232. Since he has taught around the world leading studios, I think his information is reliable (I was a student of his 13 years ago as well, so I have great confidence in his material, I have read over the years all four editions, back to back)

Enjoy.

Thanks for the feedback, thanulee.

Yes, the internet is a very colorful place, and I wish I had the time back that I wasted alone in hands-on training, arguing about right and wrong information from the web.
The most potent skill we all have to have these days is to separate the given information in useful or whatever… . Whereby most information is not really wrong, it is just not first class information.

I explore everything practically, what I like to answer here, on my own. After posting an answer, I invest additional time to double check it. I was sure the Sequence of the CV-Smart Export can do the trick, but each one had like a hologram the whole information in it. So I was glad to share a piece of better information, after the second round of testing. Yes, I never thought about any useful single frame export, yet sequenced, with Alembic, so I had to test it. Nearly every question I get here triggers this procedure, and if I do not do the whole route, it doesn’t work well. After 15 years of answering online, I can say that at least with certainty.

Cheers

P.S.: the only way I could think it will work would be with a Python Script, but that would be a question to the Plug-in Cafe.

Thanks again, thaulee. Enjoy your evening as well.

If you know someone with Python skills, perhaps they can help, here is a little hint
Alembicabc[c4d.ABCEXPORT_FRAME_END]
Alembicabc[c4d.ABCEXPORT_FRAME_START]
But this would be a question for the
https://plugincafe.maxon.net
I’m not the one to ask in this regard.

My best wishes.

P.S.: a quick intro is here:
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/c4d_r20_new_alembic_features_and_caching

I checked Export as Alembic
Bake and save as Alembic
Save for Nuke (nk and abc)
As well as
CV SmartExport.

All of them produce one file. Which makes the most sense to me.

Single file Sequences might have been an idea back in time…
I can’t find any information about sequences for C4D released after R20
