Hi,

A parent object with some child object (a group object).
In view port, if I click on object, its selecting child object which I dont need, is there way to select parent object instead of child object…?

Thanks.
Imran.

Hi Imran,

At the moment you click on the Parent, the Attribute Manager shows only the parameters for the Parent.
If you want to move, rotate or scale the Parent independently, hold down the 7 (Move Parent) while doing so.

Is there anything that I miss?

All the best

7 is for if object is child of other object.

But here is “null” with few object. Any way to select null if I click any child object. I tried different keys but its selecting object only… not selecting null.

Thanks.

Hi Imran,

I get that he Null object is obscured by other objects. Typically you can Shift-Control click in the view to get “stacked” objects. With a Null that is often a hit or miss.

My suggestion, use Null> Attribute Manager> Object> Display: Sphere, and set it large.

Here is a little screen capture about:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/JmpDE0IvAON25PgXMYYOFU4JPyXgXNpWsfISeJIeI3N

Besides that, you can use the Viewport Filter and have only the Nulls visible for example.

IS this the answer you were looking for?

All the best

Changing in attribute manager and make view port more complex look… I dont think its good idea.

Before drag, there is no any hot key…. to hold and drag all object under null or to select null…?
click object and then select null from object manager and then back to object and drag or scale. 3 functions in one hot key not better…!

Thanks.

Imran,

To drag all children? in the Object Manager or View? In the Object manager, Set Parent. However, it destroys any hierarchy that was given to any of the selected objects.

MMB perhaps? But that is for the Object Manager.

If an element needs a lot of tweaking, while being in a cluster of objects, it is common practice to provide handles (Character Animation would be the main example here). If that is not your target, then don’t use it. If something is a good or bad idea depends on the context and other things.

In the first post, you wanted something that different than you describe in the last post of yours.

I’m not aware of a default hotkey for “click and drag all child objects”.

A Selection Object can be created to define a group and single objects in a mix to be selected at one.

In the Main Menu> Window> Customization> Customize Commands, you will find all possible commands and shortcuts. Search for Child, Parent, Object, Move, etc.

Besides that, you can use the Script log and create a new script, which can have then in return its own Hot-Key

Another way is to have a Selection Filter supporting your work. Which can be “recorded” with the script log and with individual hotkeys, you might shape the tools you need.

Perhaps make a suggestion:

Your questions seems to turn directions with each post, I can interpret them in too many ways. Please describe it with a scene file attached. Let me know if there is anything else, I’m happy to look into it.

Cheers

Thanks for the multiple options.
My question was selecting null by clicking on object in view port….! Rotate, drag or scale is action after selection.

But sorry…. my question was not much clear, I will try next time with file or a screen video.

Thanks,
Imran.

Thanks, Imran.

A scene file is just more explicit. The objects have names, and I can send something back or record what I suggest as a solution, brainstorming or workaround. My observation is, over the last fourteen years helping people online, that their words make sense while having the screen and with that the scene in front of them. But more often than not, the words can be interpreted in several ways, given the fact that I might fill the gaps with previous questions, something like that or similar.

I know it sounds odd for a simple selection question to ask for a file, but I guess if you read this thread in a year or two, you might feel the same as I did today. However, I’m mainly interested in providing something that works, I don’t like to be a pest asking for files. But it saves time.

Here is a little screencast, that showcases how to get even several steps to execute based on a single short cut. I’m not a coder, so test this carefully. Cineversity has some material about this of course.

Perhaps download it, to have a better viewing experience

ENJOY

Imran, I have searched a little bit more.

Here is a script from kalugin, and any object that is currently selected, if it has a parent, the short cut will lead you to the parent. If there is another parent to the previous, the short cut needs to be executed again.

Screen capture how it works:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/PF4xm4Rn1o2IXR0DghUwu0fzlpnsln2TemPc2bxjh
Script with an icon needs to be placed into your script folder.
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/Vww3K8FOX3OpM62OIeecf83i5fHRtOEh6dBZvqbsVEy

I’m not a coder, but it seems pretty straight forward, and setting the bit to active is something I have seen by quite a few people. However, test this, no guarantee.

Cheers

import c4d

# drs credit note: script created by kalugin July 09 2018

def main():
  selected = doc.GetActiveObjects(0) # gets the current active objects
  parent = selected[0].GetUp() # gets the parent of the first object in the selection
  if parent: #if the object has a parent
      for obj in selected:
        obj.DelBit(c4d.BIT_ACTIVE) # the script deselects the active objects
      parent.SetBit(c4d.BIT_ACTIVE) # and selects the parent
  c4d.EventAdd()

if __name__==‘__main__’:
  main()
