Happy New Year, Doc!  I hope your year is off to a beautiful beginning.

I’m wondering if there is a way to add an object to more than one layer in Cinema 4D?

Thanks!

Mark

There is no option to have several Layers assigned to one Object. However, you can change the Layer via Takes. In this way, you can set up different Groups, as one would have with the “Set-Theory”.

Another way might be to have a hierarchy with Layers

https://help.maxon.net/us/#11074

A less attractive way would be, to follow a specific naming convention, and since this can be filtered, it can be bookmarked. Perhaps those bookmarks are then used in an additional Object manager.

Besides that, since I have no further information why you needed that, something that comes to mind is the Selection Object, which can hold a group of objects when reactivated, all similar parameters can be edited at once, as visibility [editor/render].

If you like to have a multi-label option, this would be then a suggestion to Maxon. It could work as the labels in MacOS-X, but since each layer has an option to switch off crucial parts of the object, I see a conflict there, which you might address in the suggestion, if you have an idea, like what rules are given in case of a conflict.

Thanks for your response, Doc.  The reason why I asked the question is because I have a complex scene with hundreds of objects and I’d like a layer that contains all object except the characters that I can mute while posing the characters.  I’d like some of the objects within that layer, such as a group of rooms, to exist both on the original layer and also on their own unique layer so I can mute only the room group, but still see the characters and other objects in the scene that aren’t on the second layer.  Hopefully this makes sense.

Mark,

Create a master layers [parent], with cmd click you can switch all child settings at once.

I would just place small groups [child-groups] that need to be in a group always on a single layer.

Then set up Take sub-masters (situations) for each needed configuration of the scene with the layers

Name them wisely wink

Have a look here, perhaps download it:
