Hello,
Is there an efficient way to remove/consolidate unused, repeating, and/or obsolete materials and selection tags on a mesh object?

See screenshot for the current situation.

After several rounds of connect and delete and split poly commands to organize several meshes into a better more sensible grouping, I get a lot of leftover (technically) unassigned materials and obsolete selection tags.

IF I can remove any of the Selection tags that don’t any associated polys/points in the current mesh, I could hunt down materials by hand from there.

Any scripts or plugins that address this sort of task are welcome too.

Hi GiantSimon,

Here is a QuickTip from Rick discussing some options.
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/use_vertical_tags_mode_to_filter_and_manage_selection_tags

Please focus especially on the end of the clip, where he discusses the CV-Tool: Selection Manager.

To your question, I guess there is no single Selection that is not in use, as it was inherited from the previous mesh, and was only translated to the new point/polygon index.
I have no knowledge about any other scripts that would have any option to filter more than Rick’s tools.

All the best

P.S.: see link below (next post), as well! As usual, Patrick delivers a crystal clear introduction and overview.

Thanks Dr. Sassi,
You reminded me of the CV Selection manager too. (https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/CV_selection_manager_introduction)

Between the CV Selection Manager tool and the vertical Tag view, I will be able to muscle through the task a bit faster and more efficiently.

I’ll start billing using a Pay-per-click pricing model.

Cheers,
jamie

Yes, Jamie,  that was the hint on the end of the tutorial above. I was not certain how much that Manager would help you. So, I left the post with just one link.

What I would suggest, perhaps for future work, to rename the selections and materials that you like to keep, or the ones that you might need to delete, so the filter option later on is faster.

It would be nice to get paid by click and mouse-millage, hehe.

My best wishes for your project.
