Hi. First time posting and I’m sure this is a standard issue noob question.

I’m trying to subtract an object in a cloner, inside a Boole, from a primitive. Ive been looking at tutorials, but I can’t find anything specific to this. I’ll upload the file and an image of what I’m trying to get. Thanks very much for any help I get. It’s very very much appreciated.

Sorry the file upload wasn’t working. Here’s a drive link:

Hi hello,

Thanks for using Google as a cloud service, it is one of the four I open (DropBox, Amazon, Apple, and Adobe).

The little spheres from the Cloner were under the surface of the sphere. So you would have “bubbles” inside the larger sphere.

If the image is the target, and the little triangles are the holes you like to have, I would model those.
Please have a look here

If you like to have different holes, please let me know. I’m happy to look into it.

I had a more extended hands-on class about this theme, and you can take a look here:

Cheers, stay safe, stay healthy.

You’re very welcome, Jamie, thanks for the feedback.

Going by your image, I have recorded a second clip that comes closer to the pattern. Please have a look:

Thanks. I do actually have one other problem. As I’ve been going through this, I can’t seem to get the extrude inner to work. It just doesn’t have any effect at all. I’ve gone over what was done in the video you extremely graciously made and uploaded, but I can’t seem to get it to work. I’m sure there’s something very simple I’m missing.

Anyhow I’m uploading a screen shot and the file. Totally understand if you don’t want to go down the rabbit hole on this, and thanks for all the help thus far.

Jamie.

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the file and for using Google.

I can see in the screen-shot that for the Extrude Inner> Attribute manager> Options> Preserve Groups is on. Set this to off, and it should work as expected.

Please let me know if anything else comes up, I’m happy to look into it.

Cheers

Oh sorry that’s not entirely accurate. I did in fact shut off preserve groups and it still wasn’t ‘working. If you take a look at the file it should already be turned off in there.

Thanks smile

Thanks for the update, Jamie.

Please have a look at the file below
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/UX5h0j8C8RMDDDuZWnDZ1F1Q2qUsfFFXHrq9qXTscWR

I have set up the exact same Sphere and dragged just the Selection tag as well as the Random Field to it.

Use the Extrude Inner [M~W], and while the group option is off, as you did before, drag the mouse/pen to get a positive value for the Extrude Inner.
If that works, we have found what is not working. To produce with the shared Sphere the same effect, my first attempt to Extrude inner shows no visible results, but in the Structure Manager, I can see much more Polygons have been produced. If I try again now with the Extrude Inner, it works, but it has around 7,000 polygons more. Something is off.

If I open your scene as I got it, and copy the Sphere and paste it in a new scene, it works from the start.

I can’t see more points, or polygons in your file, than with my reproducing your results.
If I copy your Sphere, use Current State to Object or use any other way to reproduce a copy of it, the results will work fine.

All the best

You’re very welcome, Jamie.

Sorry that you had to experience that at all. It felt like a corrupt file.

I was only able to reproduce it with a polygon that had already an Extrude Inner applied, but with zero distance. So it looked OK, but it tried to Extrude Inner between edges that were on top of each other. With the second try (Extrude Inner) it worked, but the number of Polygons was way too hight (Structure Manager)

I always go out of a scene file, when something isn’t working, and start in a new file with the smallest object I can think off. Most of the time, this works.

ENJOY
