Quadruped rig flexibility questions (character tool)

Hey all,

I’m rigging my first a cat, got to the animation phase and am running into some issues. First question is about rig flexibility: The rig doesn’t allow some poses I’m trying to achieve and not sure if it’s the limitation of the rig or if there are extra options that I’m not seeing. The attached image, cat_pose.jpg is what I’m trying to achieve. More specifically, the hind leg/foot and how it’s completely flat on the ground. The current rig rotates around the ankle area (where the metatarsals and phalanges meet) so if I put the tarsals and metatarsals flat on the ground, the phalanges point up to the sky.

The second question is when I make the cat’s tail, the controllers are aligned with each other instead of how you would think they would align (the pictures are pretty self explanatory). I tried to edit them in adjust > controller mode, but to no avail.

Third and final question. Is there a good animation pipeline for selecting controllers? More specifically, it would be nice to select controllers in a list like in the object panel instead of finding it in the viewport. This would also help for when selecting all of the controllers to apply a keyframe to the entire rig for each pose.

I’m sure I will have many more questions in my rigging endeavors. Thanks for the help!

Hi spencerokada,

Please have a look to the image, I hope it explains at least what is possible with the question about the tail and the “list” (Create HUD). Note that the HUD can be sorted, just hold the CMD key down.

The tail was set up as FK. Note that I have rotated the Controllers for the purpose of demonstration, how they are initially has no influence on the functionality itself.

The leg can be adjusted, and I guess it needs the Hell to have a value as in the image below. But rotate the paw first, it magically supports the set up; The Ankle Slider has the same effect, BTW.

My suggestion, have a look at anything Bret Bays has published here about Character Rigs. He was heavily involved in creating this tech in the first place. So first hand information here!
Click on his name in the Instructor list. Then browse through the results. There is as well a 2015 Siggraph Rewind, which you will find quickly with Instructor>Cineversity.

All the best

Funny, I’ve never seen the foot controls in the attributes panel before. I think it’s because I would almost always instantly hit the move or rotate shortcut after I select the control. Thanks for pointing that out, exactly what I was looking for!
