Hi everyone, I watch this video https://vimeo.com/34386467 and I tried to do something similar with a plane, cloner and spline wrap but the waving flag is not realistic, I was wondering if someone can help me to create something much better. I attach simple scene link with an example. Hope you can help me with some ideas.

Hi Iaec,

I would hang a fabric (plane with cloth) just vertically (y direction) and belt this with a cube. Allow for 300 frames or more, to have some variety.  Set the wind direction and if a nice state is reached, based on the turbulence, cache it.  Then scrub along the timeline and find a good state of the flag.

Go to the Cloth tag and set on that specific “state” the “initial” state.

Delete the cache.

You might change the duration now. Use the Point cache tag to store the movement. Set it to “loop”, so you gain something that will work a long time.

Switch the Cloth Engine to off (Cloth Tag)

You create then copies of it, set the offset value in the Point Cache to an values that allows for different states (or create new ones with different turbulence settings.)

These go into a Cloner Object to create a long line of flags.

The cloner Object is then combined with a Spline Wrap (set to keep length).

A path (spline) is created and if you like a second spline as Rail to direct the planes even more.

——-

Alternative a “Displacer deformer” could be used for more details on the flag (e.g., with the Water Shader).

You might also change things to you liking etc, this is just one way that could work for you.

All the best

Sassi

Dr. Sassi, your advice it was really helpful. Thanks a lot for share with community your knowledge and techniques. I followed each step of explanation, everything was so clear, and now flags look much better.

Really thanks, I learned something new!

Cheers!

Hey Iaec,

You’re welcome! Great that it worked. You will find certainly a lot of options to adjust and change it to your liking.

Have a great weekend

Sassi
