Clones and tracer

Hello

I feel like I’ve found a solution to this problem years ago, but I can’t remember how I did it…I’m trying to have two clones, with the exact same numbers of clones, to connect to each other with a tracer.  In other words, clone 1 from cloner 1 connects to clone 1 from cloner 2 etc….

Is that possible?

Thanks!

Hi Alex,

I guess you have this in mind:

https://www.cineversity.com/forums/viewthread/2130/

With clones, it can be done with a Spline that has lots of segments (each of them has two points only) and with XPresso.

Sounds like a plan? I will set up an example, but first have a look here, similar not the answer, but similar:

Ha yes!  I remember now…

If you have an example with cloners I would love to see it!

Thanks!

Alex, here is the file:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/beT88IrklFEFHdoJR6qPsjVWY8sR6y8oaPidHDxBoMc?ref_=cd_ph_share_link_copy

Note that the XPresso “ZeroZero” works on each frame first. Which is only needed if you change the amount of clones. Disable it for a fixed clone number, after setting the clones.
Alternative: one could sett all spline segments to zero above the number of clones, etc, let me know what you project needs.

The Spline is a two point segment spline with 100 segments. Create a Create>Spline>Empty Spline; set it to linear no interpolations. Create the amount of copies needed and Select all Splines, Object Manager> Objects>Connect and delete. (If you check the Layer Browser, there is a script who creates 100 splines at ones. Just a sketch, I’m not a coder!)

Let me know if that works for you

My best wishes

Alex, well, after a “little” bit of exploring, I came up with this idea. I love the simplicity of it.

File:

Please note that the Tracer needs to be the last (lowest) in the set up.
The two Effectors go into the Cild-Cloners. But there is of course an option to use in the top Cloner as well additional Effectors.

The screenshot shows a set up with a Sweep.

Hey Sassi

That’s an interesting idea, but I don’t think it can work for my setup.  See this file
https://www.dropbox.com/s/xrwt1js5arrv6se/Projector setup.c4d?dl=0

I think your first solution would work, even though I love the simplicity of the second one, which can indeed be used for many things!  It actually gave me an idea for another project I’m working on!

Thanks!

Alex,

What do you like to have, the scene doesn’t give me a hint. Just a Cone with clones?

Any motion movement?

Example

Hi Sassi

I should have explained better…I’m not doing any animation, but I want to be able to easily modify the arrangement of clones on the larger side of the cone, while leaving the smaller size intact.  So being able to use a Shader effector for example is important.  I’m working on creating shapes that derive from a sort of “cone” distortion, but the large end could end up being more of a square or a rectangle rather than a circle…
So the cloner approach gives me more flexibility to experiment with shapes.
But using an actual cone is something I didn’t think of!  I can definitely experiment with that too!

Thanks again

Just a little idea:

Ha, that’s a really interesting idea, PoseMorph is great….

Thanks for all this brainstorming and sharing ideas!
