Ipad Screen replacement in C4D and AE

Hi Folks,

I am trying to do a simple screen replacement using a model of an IPAD, placing a plane on the screen, adding an object buffer and external compositing tag to create a solid I can replace with footage. This all works great until I bring it into After Affects. In AE it comes in flat on a 0.0 plain. The keyframes are baked so I can’t change it, unless I want to change all the keyframes. It tracks with the screen but is at 90 degree angle to the screen so its basically useless.

I’m pretty sure its something small I am neglecting to do or doing wrong. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve,

Any chance to share this scene? (I can set up an upload link if you have no option).

The Object axis is where the axis in C4D was, but connect a plane in Ae to it and move the plane.

Do you have the correct camera (It tracks with the scene might have answered this, but I have to ask anyway) on and all needed parts set to 3D in Ae.

All the best

Hi Dr.Sassi

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I haven’t uploaded file but I did create a pic that highlights the problem in AE and added a modified screenshot of my C4D setup. The big pink plane is the plane I want to replace. The little *red one* is the solid produced from the external compositing tag.

If you need the C4D file or the AE file let me know.

Cheers

Here is a file and a one minute clip, Steve.

There are certainly many ways to do that. Lets try it this way.

I like to have my C4D material untouched (even in the last ten seconds of the clip I show an alternative). To leave the C4D material as it is has some advantages, think of reconnecting all of the stuff with an update…
So, I like to use things in Ae that I can set up with Ae native “objects”.

In the first 50 Seconds of the clip I take the renderings from C4D and the aec file and start from there. Note that I use here jpg as demo/proxy “stuff”, I would not suggest that for any production, 8bit/channel is for proxies and preview only.

Let me know if that works, otherwise I need your file to showcase it on that.

Enjoy your Sunday!
