Feather texture question

Hello

I’m working with feathers for the first time, and having an issue with the hair material.  I’ve set the Hair tag to use Feather UV’s, and apply the hair material to the feather.  I put a gradient in the color>texture channel, and from what I can see, my gradient is being applied to each hair individually?  I’m getting a very noisy looking result…
I must be missing a step?  I went through a couple of tutorials and read the manual, but maybe something has changed with this object?

Here is my scene file

Thanks
Alex

Hi Alex,

Go to the Gradient, then to Type, change from U to V.

(I have set on color to green to showcase this.)

This should do the trick.

All the best

Thanks Sassi
I tried that, but it makes the gradient go from the rachis to the tip, I want the gradient to travel across the vertical axis

Thanks
Alex

What I got is that you went through the manual, Alex. So I didn’t mentioned the content of the first Feather page.

Reference> CINEMA 4D> CINEMA 4D Visualize, Broadcast, Studio> Hair> Objects and Tags
Feathers
(…)

4. You will see a special projection type, specifically for Feather objects, in the Hair Material Tag’s Hair UVs menu. With this projection type you can apply a texture (the first Texture field in the material’s Color channel) across the entire surface of a feather.

Then set the V direction.

I have attached two examples, one with the Gradient [02] and one with a checkerboard [01]

Note that I have set all values for best demonstration, e.g., LOD [level of detail, etc]

My best wishes

Yep, I did read that page about the specific feather projection, but I have no idea why, it was not working for me…I tried all three projection methods, but no luck.
I realized that I kept messing around with the file I shared on dropbox instead of saving a different one, so what you opened must have looked pretty messy, sorry about that.

I just started a fresh scene, and simplified everything.  I think I got it to work now…

Thanks for sharing the file!

You’re welcome, Alex.

From all UV stuff doable in C4D, Hair feels to me as the most unintuitive. Perhaps based on the fact that there is not editor for it nor even a ‘preview” option, such as a build in checker grid.

I always struggle how much I write, and what to suggest. For some it is always too cryptic and for some perhaps always too detailed. I know that there is no way to would deliver a “One Size Fits All”, but I guess sometimes it is expected.

Anyway, I’m glad it worked.

Enjoy.
