Hi

Quick question.
Is it possible to render an object’s glow but not the object so that all you see is the glow?

There’s a checkbox in Maya that allows you to do that. So for example, you could create a cone for a rocket exhaust, add a glow but then not render the object so that all you have is a soft rocket glow.

Thanks.

Hi Dmaxman,

Not to my knowledge - in one render session. You might need to render in passes and composite this.

The question would be if a light source could do that for you, diffuse and specular to off, but visibility to on.

There might be other options, but that would need a scene file, to find something out. Let me know if that is a general question or a specific question.

Thanks again for the prompt reply.

I want to animate a glowing dotted line (sweep nurbs of a circle spline). I was going to animate a tiled gradient alpha along it by canting the offset v on the texture tag. Didn’t want the polygons to render, just the glow.

Thanks for the additional information, Dmaxman.

Have a look into this set-up. Important to this set up, to render fast, is the diffuse and specular (GI Illum) to off. Visibility instead of volumetric.

It should have all the options to adjust what you might need. If not, let me know, perhaps we find something else.
