Hello
I’m stuck on something very silly, I feel the answer must be under my nose.  In the scene below, I’m trying to make some cubes in this grid “disappear” as they move down below a certain threshold.  My trick is to put a black plane at a certain level and when the cubes go below they disappear (I haven’t found a way to make them “fade” away).
The problem I’m having is that despite combining a random field and a formula field, I still get cubes “popping” on and off, rather than just randomly moving up and down….
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Hi Alex,

Here is your Redshift file back.

I would use the Random Effector to have it as slow as needed. (Random Effector> Effector> Animation Speed). The Scale is the “magnification” of the noise; the larger it gets the smaller the neighbors’ steps.

Based on your material, I have added a Ramp and used a vertical flat projection (Material Tag> Projection. This allows the objects to fade the lower they get. I hope that “black ground fog” feeling was the target. Let me know if you have something else in mind.

All the best

Hello Sassi, I am eager to see your setup, but I think you might have sent me the wrong file?  It was a camera panning over a starry sky…

Thanks!

Sassi, is there something particular about what you did in the file that would choke redshift? I tried opening the original file I sent you, and it renders fine in the viewport and render view.  The one you sent me gives me a memory error and won’t render at all..

So, sorry Alex, I fear that my settings caused that.

Please go to Render Settings> Redshift> System> Bucket Rendering> and set it back to your value – 128.

Anything else, I have no idea what that could have caused.

If that isn’t working, can you copy and paste the Object Manager content into a new project file (testing.)

Fingers crossed.

I just copy pasted everything into a new file, and it works..but only on frame 1…strange.
If I remove the shader your tweaked, it starts working again but without the shading…

Yeah so checked the bucket settings in the new file and bucket is at 258, but still only rendering one frame and then all others black…weird.
I’m going to try to re-creating the shader.  But I do have one question : if I try to create RS Ramp shaders in the new node editor, and pipe the Color User Data into Ramp, if I try any input, I get an error…Is there a different way of connecting those nodes in the new node editor?

Thanks for the extra information, Alex.

I used 2023.

What I did was to use a “black and white” Ramp and multiply it (RS Layer) with the “RS Color User Data” > “RS Ramp” that was already in the material.

I’m rendering it here right now, and so far all fine.

After eight frames went without problems, I piped the (my) Ramp directly into the RS Material Node. Rendered again to the Picture Viewer, and all is fine.

I assume you have the newest version?

Nodes are connected, and I have no idea what other way there could be.

If you take that material into a new scene and set up just a few cubes while setting up the material as Flat and the texture project, it is a vertical square as in the scene I sent: The same problem? (I try the exclusion method here.)

I will test more tonight.

All the best

Hi Alex,

Please try these two; the “21” file excludes the extra ramp, to be sure it is not that.

Cheers
