I’m trying to add a springy effect to a trail behind an object.  like, an overshoot based on the motion, but it comes to rest where the object actually went.

i tried a matrix object to get the delay effector’s spring, but it never returns to the actual object path.  is there another way to do this? thanks for the help!

Hi tech,

Please have a look at the files provided below.

File 01 regulates the amount of Delay based on the velocity of the main object. This is measured and indicated in the scene. I have set it to a slower FPS to evaluate the value that I place into the Range-Mapper Input Upper.

The file 11 works similarly, but it takes the “tail” from the main object and the tip of it from the “delay” path.

In both cases, the Range-Mapper Spline Interface will “shape” the overshoot dramatically. If the Output of the Range-Mapper goes down to zero, the secondary object goes back to the animated path.

Let me know if that works, or if your target was different. I’m happy to explore other options.

All the best, stay safe, stay healthy.

P.S.: …one more:

The Jiggle has very nice options to adjust the path. Note that the Polygon has only one point. (Create>Promitive>Empty Polygon. While selected: Structure Manager (Mode>Point)>File> New Line; only one line!)

Since the object with the Jiggle attached has one point, the Point Cache can be used to store the data. If the Jiggle stays active after caching, it will double the movement, so it needs to be shut off. Cappucino comes to mind as well.

Enjoy
