Water “vortex” or whirlpool

Hello
I’m trying to create an effect a bit like a vortex in water.
See reference here
https://www.dropbox.com/s/y50pak3xswdkifc/Anish-Kapoor-decension-4.jpg?dl=0

I’ve tried doing it with X-Particles and Xplosia FX (see my test here : https://www.dropbox.com/s/lyxcbh3kefsumxy/WaterRing_3.c4d?dl=0)

But the problem is that it is extremely intensive.  It is basically a set of helix splines with emitters for Xplosia FX smoke, a flowfield and a VDB mesher.

I know this is not an X-Particles forum, and so I’m wondering if there is a way to do this kind of thing with the built in tools?  Something more efficient in terms of rendering and simulation?
Maybe a deformer approach?  It doesn’t have to be super realistic, but has to look like the movement of water and have some features of water, but not foam or photorealism.

Thanks!

Hi Alex,

Please have a look at this project file:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/ljdJj17dKLrzp3395fEmEs7eQL8FOXMoLIi88VlTyS0

I would cache it first, (inside the Volume Builder), click on the Cache Layer icon, and press the Cache button below. Then press play.

Let me know if that works for you.

All the best

Hey Sassi!

Wow, thanks!  That’s amazing. Looks really good!
One question : how would you create some imperfections on the edges?  So that it doesn’t look like a perfect circle?  Something almost as if the edges of the whirlpool where being “distorted” by the water flow?

Thanks!!!!

Thanks for the kind feedback, Alex, and you’re welcome.

Please have a look here as well, I just finished it:

Imperfection can be done with the Displacer deformer and a Falloff/Field. I have done it here over the top to make a point:

Cheers

P.S.: I forgot the Sky Object for the reflections, you might copy that from the file above. I will however fix it
