r21 - viewport issues

I just installed R21, it was working fine. I opened it up and now all my views in the viewports only show shading and I can’t get it to show the materials or lighting without doing some type or render. I dont know what setting changed. Can anyone please help.

Also, i am trying to have an outside image in the top viewport and match the placement of objects I created on top of the ones in the placed image, but I dont know how to do that in R21

Thank you

Hi Scott,

Sorry to hear about your trouble.

Since I do not know how much you know about Cinema4D, let me start with a little screen capture. Please tell me if the content of the one minute clip showed your problems.
Perhaps you know all of that, and it is a much more severe problem that needs to be solved.

One minute screen capture:

There are certainly some steps that can be done as a wild guess, but I will wait until I get some feedback from you what you see.

You also can take this to the Support and ask them, which is what I’m supposed to suggest when it is a technical problem, here at Cineversity it is all about learning. Yes, sometimes that overlaps, and I try to sort this out before I suggest to go to the support.

Please note that I’m on the West Coast (L.A.), and I’m happy to look in the morning into your reply.

Cheers

Here is what my screen looks like, and then what the render looks like. I have always been able to see the materials within my views, but now i cant. And i have to click on the object in order for it to appear otherwise nothing appears on screen.

The way you included an image into the view port was great. thank you

Thank you for the help. its greatly appreciated

Hi Scott,

Please have your mouse indicator over the editor-view with the problem: then use the short cut N~Q. (Directly with no other action after the N the Q)

You will find this command also here:

Editor Menu> Options> Materials N~Q

Fingers crossed that this will work for you.

My best wishes

Thank you for the suggestion, but unfortunately that didn’t fix the problem.
also, if i click on anything, then everything else disappears - perhaps thats connected to the problem

its strange cause its worked perfectly for the past few days. Then I opened it up thing evening and all sorts of things changed without me doing anything.
Would a reinstall be advisable?

Hi Scott,

I see from time to time suggestions to trash the preferences, then restart. If that doesn’t help, restart the computer, then re-install, etc. I would suggest that as a last resort before to check with the Support.

However, I like to find the reason, as otherwise, you have to keep doing that until you know what triggered it. So, I do not suggest any of these right now. I hope that makes sense.

I have sent you an upload link, please check your Private messages here on Cineversity.

Please save your scene WITH assets. Then Zip it and use the upload link. I will keep the file private.

I will let you know if I have an idea what to do, or if the Support should handle it.

Talk to you soon.

Scott,

Typically I don’t guess, as it cost time on both sides. (But from time to time I try this guessing concept again.)
Edit: again, guessing doesn’t work well, Solo was only part of the problem/ edit

Please check the Solo options on the left side. Could it be that your models have several surfaces, e.g., one for the labels? Could it be that you solo’d out those.

I like to have the scene file here, so I don’t have to guess. I really should have asked for it from the start.

All the best

Thanks for the file, Scott.

Please do the following: (Control/Command: below simplified as Control)

• Select everything in the Object Manager [OM]. Mouse over the OM and Control + A.

• Click on the top Solo icon on the left. (Solo Off)

• Then Control + C to copy anything from the OM

• Control + N to create a new Project file

• Safe this new scene in the folder that you have sent to me. Alternatively, in the folder where the tex folder is with all your textures.

• Then Control + V in the new file. All content from the previous project file into the new.

• Save again.

It should be fine now.

Let me know if that worked. If not, try as the first step to delete anything that is a plugin. The View-Settings>Texture option had no influence anymore. This works again in the new scene, which has its Render Preset to “My Render Setting”. In short: something has broken your file. To have zero 3rd party items for the first step is crucial.

Cheers
