Melt Edges identical to Dissolve?

Documentation for Dissolve states “This command works similar to the Melt command, the difference being, that unnecessary points will also be deleted automatically.”

The documentation for Melt states this for Edge mode: “Removes the selected edges; points that have become superfluous as a result are also deleted.”

In Broadcast R20, I can confirm that Melt of edges does remove unnecessary points as does Dissolve.  So this appears to be a minor issue in the documentation.  But is Dissolve now completely identical to Melt of edges? If so, probably don’t need that command anymore.

Hi Ricky Sharp,

I can’t confirm this in edge mode. In which mode you are while using the two commands?
The manual states:
“When in Point or Polygon mode, Dissolve functions exactly like the Melt command.”

Here is a screen capture with the Broadcast Version R20:

(I also tested it in both Preference settings [not in the screen capture, though]. Preference>Modeling Sculpting> Disconnected Points…)

Let me know if that clears it for you, or what is different to yours.

I was in edge mode.  The documentation makes it sound like Dissolve does something more than Melt.  But I’m finding that Melt of edges is identical to Dissolve of edges.  Perhaps a previous version of C4D worked differently.

Please have a look at the next screen capture, Ricky Sharp.

I hope that helps to see a difference.

I also checked earlier version, down to R17. All the same, I can’t see a change there. Would you mind to try again?
If you find something, I hope I can recreate it. Let me know, I’m happy to look into it.

All the best

Ok, I much better understand the differences now.  I was only doing very simple work and didn’t see any differences earlier.

Thanks again, Dr. Sassi!

Sounds good, thanks for the feedback, Ricky Sharp.

The Structure Manager is more often than not a good information source. I use it equally like the “info-panel” in Photoshop.

If there is anything else, just let me know.

Have a nice day!

P.S.: Thanks as well for the reminder which version you use. Really appreciated.
