Hi,
I went through Cinema’s character rigging setup and am unable to get the individual finger controls to work? Been able to do it in the past but for some reason can’t seem to get it to work. Thanks!
File is here:

Hi Joel,

I can rotate every finger-joint and the mesh is following, What else would you like to do?

All the best

Hey Joel,

Yes, that can be tricky sometimes. It becomes easier if the object in “question” is selected in the Object manager. You might consider as well to use “Main Menu>Selection>Selection Filter” and set it to Splines, only for the time being. If I go then to the Spline handles, it works on the first click.

(Alternative—Help content—In the viewport, position the mouse pointer over the object you want to select. Shift+right-click (Windows) or Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+click (Mac OS) to open a selection window containing all objects hit by the selection ray. Choose the object that you want to select.)

All the best

Dr. Sassi
On a previous project with C4D 14, I was able to rig a hand and control the individual fingers with sliders that were generated by C4D character tools. Now its as if that option doesn’t exist?

Joel,

Have you used a Pose Morph perhaps. Set it for the hand to Hierachy and Rotation. (The Tag should go to the Character-Object)

You can set for each joint, or complete finger or e.g., to create a fist at once sliders. As many variations as you like.

All the best

I didn’t use the pose morph to achieve this in the past. I used the advanced biped template that comes with the character rig.
Here is a screen shot of what should be coming up but I cant seem to get to this menu?

Hi Joel,

If I start one of these set ups completely new, I get the controls with the Hand-IK, but not with the Hand-FK.

The needed XPresso is created in your file and the fingers have e.g., a controller splines to curl them.

It looks like the Control Component has the option to be part of this “UserData” connection, but I haven’t found any text in the user data nor in the tutorials that would explain it. So the Support might be more helpful here. Hence my input to use the PoseMorph here, as it allows as well for complex gestures with one slider.

I went quickly through all tutorials, but there was nothing that gave a clue how to fix that, I might missed it—scrubbing though them.

Bret Bays has created a three part introduction to this
http://www.cineversity.com/vidplaylist/the_character_object/character_object_part_1

and a way more advanced series here

http://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/creating_a_custom_template_part_01
The hand controller (via PoseMorph) is discussed from Patrick Goski here

Good luck

Wow. I just needed to do IK fingers instead of FK fingers. Knew it was something simple.
Thanks for the research as well Dr. Sassi, I’m going to check those tutorials out.

Hi Joel,

Since Kai and Bret are both “Animation Mentor Alumni” and very skilled with this kind of work, I focused always more on my film-stuff. But I think I have to dive deeper into it. Answers should be given much faster… ;o)

I hope I pointed you in the right way.

I used XPresso and User Data Slider to build two main “mixer” for my last little “hero”, I like to have everything compact and no wild clicking around while doing my “method acting” with aliens. :o)

Have a good one
