Hi Molly,

The Feather Object is based on rendering, not on geometry, in this way there is no direct way to export this.
You might experiment a little - to make it editable, which turns it into a Hair Object and from there you might set the Hair into (generate) polygons for example. Which might change heavily the result). This is just a guess, based on a little test on my side, I do not see that as a solution.

All the best

Hello Dr. Sassi,
Thank you so much for responding!
I’m such a beginner that I didn’t know that any object could be based on rendering rather than geometry. I’ve been experimenting for quite a while. Now I can stop banging my head against the wall!
Thanks again,
Molly

OFF- TOPIC! The next five posts are not related to the Tutorial.

Hey Molly,

IF I would know a little bit more about your ideas for the single feather, why to export it, maybe I can develop an idea, but it might be a workaround, tough.

All the best

Hello Dr.Sassi,
I would like to model around five separate (a primary, secondary, down…) feathers in C4D. They wouldn’t need to be multiplied, because I’m not feathering a bird. I want the model very detailed with control over all points, so I can create weird (possibly unnatural) variations. Also, I’ll want export/import with Zbrush for more variations and sculpting. I guess I don’t need the hair/feather module at all. I figured it would be easier…
I could probably use some of the techniques in this tutorial, like the sweep nurbs quill, etc. Any suggestions for the barbs?
thank you for your attention!

Hey Molly,

If I get your ideas or better direction correctly, a more abstract or experimental work is wanted.

PLease check out the scene file. Please note that I have made the feather object editable (It was set to Generate> Splines (instead of Hair)

The Material goes then to the Spline.

The core idea was not to stay in the feather mode, more to model with a feather, e.g., the Camera Deformer. This is only one little idea, but should show you that you might push this all way beyond a feather.

All the best

Sassi

Hello Dr. Sassi,
Thank you so much for your ideas and the scene file. I will be trying your “one little idea”, and others. I have never used the camera deformer before! I may try to skip the feather mode entirely and use Mograph cloning…
again thank you,
molly

Hey Molly,

You’re welcome. I wish you a great time experimenting. If there is any question, just use the “Cineversity Q&A” Forum for it.

Have a great long weekend

Sassi

P.S.: I put the OT “markers” into this thread so people can jump over that, if they are looking only for direct Feather related answers.

Off Topic end.
