The newer tools that come to mind to create a circle wouldn’t work to keep the square pattern. For example, you need to cut with a spline the shape you need in a plane.

The Plane is my suggestion here, as it allows you to use the Spherify Deformer to adjust the shape as you need it. Use the Current State To Object function to get a polygon shape. As shown in the file below.

how did you connect the two circle spline to a plane?

The two splines are not connected. When you use the Knife tool, a command or control-click on the spline will cut the selected polygon. As in the tutorials described, this will be done from your viewing position. So place the spline close and have the camera on the same axis as in my file.

A simple method, a kind of “cheating/hacking,” is this one:

Change the segments of the Plane, and it stays in shape!
