Issues with constraint tag!!!

Hi,
I’m using the cinema 4d CHARACTER TOOL to aniamate a hand catching a ball.
I applied the constraint to the ball to stick to the hand when they both make contact. But each time I press the play button, there is a delay and the constraint seems to be lagging or broken. I’ve watched alot of tutorials on youtube about priority etc, I’ve done those, it’s still not working!!!.
Any Ideas of what happned?

Hi gbenga.animator,

It is difficult to say without a scene file; other than that it is a priority issue.

The ball setup should be below the character. The Constraint tag needs a higher Priority than the Character Object.
Typically, the scene is the calculated top to bottom and based on the priority given to each part.
If information is needed but not calculated, then the one from the previous frame is used. Hence the delay. If not taken care of and things are daisy-chained, it is easy to achieve even a more significant number of frames as a delay.

Even old things are valid in these two tutorials, as before.

Hi Dr. Sassi, thanks for the response.

I just attached the scene file to see

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NTdz2fL_5DMkgNZ5YaGT2Y3UWxYds5Nu/view?usp=sharing

I tried adjusting priority, it’s still lagging when I play it realtime
Maybe the character tool has some priority built that’s causing the lag

Thanks for the file and for using Google, gbenga.animator.

Here is your file back.

I placed it below the character, as mentioned above.

Then changed the keyframes to one frame to the left.

I rendered it, and it seems to work now. Let me know if you get the same result.
I saw that this was created in an earlier version.

All the best

Cheers

Hi,
Thanks , this works super well!!!

I was frustrated at first, been on this all day on s24, so I decided to see if the older version would work better.
Thanks for this.
I’m trying to get the second hand (Left hand) attched to the ball when the ball lands on the first hand (Right hand) . I attached the constraint tag to the left hand but I’m getting the lagging issue on the left arm. Since I can’t rearrange the hand heirachy in the character obnject, I wonder what can be the solution for this

Thanks for the feedback, gbenga.animator.

It just needed to start a frame earlier to “constrain”.

I would always use the binding (BD v nb) joints, e.g., R_ or L_BD_FK_Finger_Mid_jnt_2, which has the Priority Expression 60.
At one point, you will commit the rig, and press the c key with the active Character Object, then the best is to use the binding joints anyway, from my point of view.

Is that helping?

If nothing helps and your animation is finalized, you could always use Cappucino to get an object that is constrained baked. If there is any delay, the keyframes are easily moved to the left to get things in sync. But, yes, that is more of a hack than how it should work.
