Freeze Transformation vs Reset Transformation, When to use which one?

I recently switched over from Maya to C4D some time ago and have struggled with this simple function for some time now.

I don’t understand how to reset transformations in C4D.

I watched this video and it does make sense, but when I try the same method, it simply does not work in my scenes.

I have a downloaded asset from Turbosquid that comes in all over the place. If I brought that asset into Maya, I would simply move it to where I want it in a scene and then freeze transformations, and I’m good to go.

In Cinema, if I bring that asset in, and do the same steps, as soon as I hit Reset Transforms the object rotates 90 degrees. It’s my understanding that resetting the transforms would resolve that rotation and zero it out without rotating the actual object.

This brings me to the Freeze Transformation function in the attributes/coord. panel. If I Freeze All, the rotation from the coordinates is brought down to the frozen transformations, and I can then Reset Transforms. I don’t fully understand why Reset Transforms isn’t doing this in the first place.

Can somebody explain where I’m going wrong here. Is this the correct way to zero out an asset in C4D? What is the difference between reset transforms and freeze transformation in C4D?

thanks

Hi agent.8el,

This is undoubtedly an important question, and you should feel comfortable with it.

First of all, there is a difference between
“Reset Transform” and “Reset Scale”.

Reset Transform set the object back to Scale 1 and the position and rotation to zero. This will change the object to be on the position, rotation, and scale of the parent. Using this can create a lot of change.

On the other hand, Reset Scale has the option to leave the points of the objects in the same position but resets the Scale back to one.

The Freeze function allows orienting an object, e.g., a joint of a rig, following the upper arm, but the values PSR can be kept “neutral”. If the Joint was oriented correctly, then frozen, the rotation you need to adjust is zero when you start. If you reset transform now, it goes back to the initial set orientation. Often that is the Bind position.

I hope that helps to sort things out.
