C4D - FBX / OBJ Materials don’t load…

C4D is not loading materials correctly when opening FBX and OBJ files.  The materials import as simply gray or white.  The same FBX / OBJ file opened in Modo loads perfectly.  Am I missing something here??  The tex folder is with the fbx and obj files and so should load yet they’re not.

I have attached screen grabs showing a basic stock model opened in Modo vs C4D.  I’ve seen other posts on the CGSociety forums that note this exact problem and no one seems to have a solution.

Hi carsonjones,

Did you save the Cinema 4D file in the same location?
The local path of the material makes no sense when the Cinema 4D is not in the same place.

If that is not an option, you might use the
Main Menu> Window> Project Asset Inspector.

Besides that, you could link the Folder that has all the textures in the

Preferences> File>> Path

If you use the MTL file, it holds all the localized paths (of course, not the global path). This can be fixed with search and replace. But that is in a nutshell what the Project Asset Manager does.

If that is not working for you, perhaps you check with the support.

Perhaps, just file a suggestion that you like to have an option that copies images into your project file while importing.

I hope that helps.

Cheers

I’m simply opening an FBX file (or OBJ) in C4D and materials are not loading (linked?).  This doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.  Are you saying that I have to copy the FBX file and materials (i.e. tex folder) to the same location as a C4D file (not yet created) in order to get this to load materials?  Very confused.

No this isn’t the issue.  As a test I’ve placed an FBX file and it’s tex folder in the same location as a saved C4D file.  I open that C4D file and choose Merge from the menu.  Load the FBX and materials still do not load.

By comparison, the same process in Modo is simply to Open the FBX and apply default settings.  Everything loads perfectly?  Why is this so difficult or am I missing a step?

I just tried to submit a ticket and the submission form is not working.  It’s throwing an error stating that the email address must include an ‘@’, which there is, and it fails every time.

Yes, carsonjones, it looks that way, that it doesn’t load. But render it. All is there. Yes, it doesn’t update the scene automatically, sadly.

I never (99%) answer from memory. I always set up a scene that resembles, to the best of my knowledge, the problem.

You could also check that with the Material Manager>Material> Render All Materials.

Another way is to save the scene, close it, and open it. All is loaded then.

Perhaps you have to stop by the support… otherwise.

My best wishes

Submitted via your link.  I’m hoping we find a solution to this as I have hundreds of FBX and OBJ assets that I’ll need to successfully load into C4D.

I’m discovering a fair number of issues with C4D that are very surprising to find in such a mature program.

Thanks for submitting this, carsonjones.

I understand the mood that those things can cause. Here in the forum, I can only say, I’m really sorry, sadly I can’t do anything (code-wise) about it.

All the best
