Import obj files and keep the file name as object name

I want to import approx 100 small obj files in one project. I can import them quickly via the Content browser by dragging them in the modeling window. By importing the obj file this way the obj file ends up in the objectlist as ‘Default’ or ‘grp’ making it almost impossible to get the the project organized . I would like to have the original name in the object list
if I import an STL file the filename is preserved. Is there a way of preserving the filename as object name while importing obj files?

Hi Geertjan,

Please set your Preferences to
Import> Wavefront Object (obj.) Import> General> Splitting> By Identical Name.

https://help.maxon.net/us/index.html#FOBJIMPORT2-OBJIMPORTOPTIONS_GROUP

Here is a short demo of this:

I use the option/alt key to drag them in to avoid getting an import interface each time.

Let me know if that worked.

All the best

Hi Sassi.
That’s unfortunately not working for my OBJ files. It must be the obj file that is the causing this strange behaviour Using the ‘By identical Name’ option changes the name in the object list from ‘default;’ to ‘grp1’. The Obj’s I try to merge are brain regions from this site http://lifesciencedb.jp/bp3d/. I’ll attach two of the file’s

Hi Geertjan,

Thanks for adding the examples. (See image below)

When I go from the Content Browser, they come in with the right name while holding down the option/alt key.
The setting for these objects seems to be Import> Wavefront Object (obj.) Import> General> Splitting> Combine All

I hope that will work for you.

Cheers

You’re very welcome, Geertjan.

The “Splitting: Combine All” sounds very counter-intuitive to the results it shows with your example files while dragging many objects at once.

The manual gives some hints, but that would require to open each obj in a text app and search for the specific markers. I guess it is easier to use the trial and error if the first best setting is not working.

My best wishes for your project
