Hello
I’m thinking about the best way to create an effect like the image below.
Playing around with displacements in After Effects as a texture right now, but wondering if there is a way to do this in C4d directly as it will end up being integrated in a scene and being able to tweak it in Cinema would be quite helpful (rather than re-rendering from AE).
Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi Alex,

Thanks for using DropBox and the op-art image. Always loved Bridget Riley.

Here is an example.

I was not sure if the animation of it was more critical of the effect of depth (smaller in the middle).

The main idea is to use a Twist Deformer, which would do nothing really, but the Falloff will allow for a very distinct distribution of the Twist deformer. This means the more power the Falloff allows for the Twist to work, the stronger the revolving effect will be.

If you combine this with another and a different falloff, you might get even more fine-tuned results. I have left an FFD in it, just in case it could be useful. It is not required.

All the best

P.S.: one moreā€¦

Thanks Sassi!  This is exactly the look I’m going for!
I was looking through your project and not completely clear on a couple on the FFD’s role in your setup.  I can see it has a point selection applied to a restriction, but it seems that all points on the plane are selected?

This is a great setup, and since animation is my goal it provides a ton of flexibility.  Thanks!!

You’re welcome, Alex; thanks for the reply.

The FFD is set up to “scale-down” the center part of the plane. To have a “strength” parameter for this, I used the Restriction Tag since it has no falloff.
This Restriction Tag allows setting an influence value for the points in the selection (points). At the moment a Restriction Tag is applied, the Deformer will stop working. The Selection Tag can specify with a partial selection where the Deformer works. If a selection has all points in it, the value on the right of the selection-entry field in the Restriction Tag will work as a Strength adjustment.

Example (the file from above but reduced)

Let me know if that makes sense.

All the best
