Volume Builder and Fields (S22)

I am trying to recreate this effect of the floor liner appearing as it flows across the floor.(Melting 2_800x600)

I took a CAD file of an indoor mat, made a volume using .1cm voxel size, then used a linear wipe with random noise (perlin) field to make it appear. It still looks chunky and doesn’t flow as smooth as I would like since parts of the mat pop on due to the noise pattern. There is also a SDF smooth at 10% on the mesh. I upped the noise to 200% scale to try and smooth out the animation. Any ideas on making this animation “flow” better? (Mat_800x600)

Since I have the CAD file, is there a way to mask on the original file over the volume as it flows along, either in C4D or with an exported pass into After Effects?

Thanks for any help. This is my first post and I’ve only been working in C4D for about 2 weeks.

Hi BrianP,

I would need a project file to see what you have in mind with animation.
To go from images feels typically a little bit odd. A scene file is a much clearer.

The main suggestion is to use a Smooth Deformer on a sibling level to the Volume Mesher, in some instances.

However, if the Volume is at all the right way needs to be explored. Perhaps the Displacer is the way to go.
I’m not really happy with most CAD files, as those have a different target.

Again, hard to tell from images.

I can send an upload link to the Cineversity Private messages.

Thanks for the file, BrianP!

The idea of using the Smooth-Deformer, without knowing your target would be not really sufficient. Seeing the file makes it clear.

I have sent you the file back, with some adjustments. The Smooth Deformer would handle the rough edge well, but at the same time, “melt” the main parts as well. The remedy is easy: use the Group Field that is already given in the scene for the expand/grow effect and use it for the Smooth Deformer> Falloff. Perhaps set up a similar animated Field-Group, and have more control of each.

What it does is taking care of the newer parts of the growing edge and leave the older section of the object untouched. So it feels hopefully smooth where it is needed and keeps the previous quality. With an extra set up of fields, you can limit that area of smoothing. It follows the aesthetic of your YouTube example (picture on the left post #0).

Please let me know if there is anything else, I’m happy to look into it.

P.S.: here is a simplified example.

Switch on and off the Smooth Deformer to see the effect. Adjust the “Linear Field.Smooth” to get more or less of the smooth around the edge.
