Animate a Ski Gondola

Hello,

I am trying to do a low poly animation of a mountain with a gondola, and am unsure of how to control the speed of the gondola, as it varies while at the top and bottom terminals. The gondola cabins should move slow at the top and bottom and then move fast in between. I have a spline set up with the gondola cabins in a a cloner and am using “offset” to move the cabins along the spline. Is there any way to slow down the speed of the gondola cabins as they are at the bottom and top, like a real gondola would? Hopefully this is making sense, but I can clarify more if need be. Really appreciate any help and insight! Thank you!

Hi 609leininger,

Please have a look here:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/72P1tGmU427uwoXRXHDOaVNZqQf5Jn0ODaCXjxZBqk3

Note that the points of the Spline are much closer than between the “stations”.

Let me know if there is anything else, I’m happy to look into it.

Cheers

Oh this is great. Thank you! And if I wanted to reduce the speed as they come into the stations so that is gradual, I could add additional points before the arcs?

You’re welcome, 609leininger, yes, exactly.

Here is an example
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/JxfP8c3zHkLdgGSOFo5w5aOakI4AbxXmB02UsuZWzWg

Set up the spline, adjust for the fastest, and then slow it down (Knife or Move+CMD/Control).

My best wishes for your project.

One last question. Is there a way to quickly add a point between two points on the spline? Like how in edge mode you can hit “mm” and it will “connect points/edges”? Thank you!

Yes, 609leininger, there is a function to do exactly this.

Select two neighbor points, then

Main Menu [R21] > Spline> Add…> Subdivide (Perhaps click on the Cogwheel).

Main Menu [R20] > Mesh> Commands> Subdivide (Perhaps click on the Cogwheel).

(Please note, that a spline with only two points, will add extra points between both spaces of the two. With at least three points, the neighbor relationship is clear, and only between the two selected new points will be created.)

All the best

P.S.: Perhaps a little bit more complicated, but it provides the option to change the number of points (vertices) later on. Keep a gap among all segments.
