Edge color “blending mode” S&T

Hello

I have a sphere that is white on one side and black on the other
I’m trying to add an S&T shader where the lines appear black on the white side of the sphere, and white on the black side.
I’m getting close by using the “Position” modifier in the Color channel of the S&T shader, but not quite there.
What I’d like is for the lines to be solid black or solid white, and right now I’m getting more of a grey.
I tried putting the gradient on the Position modifier to Step mode, but it doesn’t help.

I’m also going to animate the gradient a bit as the spheres rotate.

Here is the file.

Thanks for any input!

Hi Alex,

Please have a look at the file below

I have no idea how to set the SnT lines to the Blend-mode Difference while the background Material is not SnT.

I have placed a texture of the edges into a Layer shader. The Gradient is black and white, and the warm color tone is added later. Otherwise, the Blend-mode Difference would create as well a bluish tone in some areas.

You can animate the Gradient.

Let me know if that works for you.

All the best

Hey Sassi

That works!
So how did you create the edge texture?  By exporting an unwrapped outline of the edges? I might need to have flexibility on the edge thinkness and count, so curious as to how you managed that process.

All the rest makes sense.  Thank you again so much

Alex,

Please have a look here:

You can adjust the Sphere-object in any way, and the Atom Array with the Sphere-radius, the Cylinder-radius, will follow via Xpresso.

The Anti-Alias is fine with Geometry, but in case you need more, set it up as you like.

Enjoy.

I see, and how are you exporting this to a flat image?  Sorry if I’m being slow to understand, I assumed it was a UV map you were exporting, but since your object is parametric I guess you must have a different approach?

Thanks!

Alex,

The equirectangular “view” of the Spherical-camera produces exactly what the Sphere object needs.

The default UV of the parametric Sphere object is the same as the Texture Tag setting spherical. So, render the image out, as set up in my scene and load it in a luminance channel to the Sphere objects in your scene. The typical aspect ratio for an equirectangular texture is 2:1 (wide to high). All lines will get to an equal size once they are on a sphere.

I hope that makes sense. If that is not clear, please let me know, I will create a little screen capture of the process then.

Cheers

Ah!  I had never used the spherical camera….That makes total sense…Perfect!  Thank you Sassi!
I really like asking these questions here because I feel like I stretch my brain every time with your solutions

Thanks again

Thanks a lot for the kind feedback, Alex, and you’re very welcome.

I thought it might be useful to have a short run-down of this in a one minute clip, just in case.
