Is it necessary to key before baking?

Hi,

The baking option is greyed out in the timeline editor when there is no keys on an object.
Just to confirm, is it necessary to have keys on the object? Or can I bake without any keying?

The object I want to bake is driven by a PSR tag.

Thank you for looking at the problem.

Hi Ben,

I assume you want to use Timeline> Functions> Bake Objects …

Manual: It does not matter if the animation is created using few or interpolated Keys, via a Vibrate Expression or using a Constraint (or even an Alembic object). Regardless of how the animation was created, this function will create one Key per animation frame.

With this option, the “initial” keyframe is not needed. However, one keyframe adds it typically to the Timeline. Make sure the Bake Expression and the required P, S, R checkboxes are set.

Is the object in the Timeline? If not, you need to drag it into the filed on the left.
Alternatively, change the Timeline> View> Automatic Mode.

Yes, I’m looking for the Timeline>Functions>Bake Objects.

Yea, they don’t appear on the timeline unless they have the keyframe.
Without them in timeline, the bake object command is greyed out.

I guess, just need to drag them one by one.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Ben,

You can have these in the timeline, even without keyframes on it, but that needs a change of the Automatic mode, as mentioned. See link above.

All the best

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, you are right! Don’t need to have any keyframes. So long the following is changed
1) Set to Automatic Mode
2) Show Animated Set to Off

Nice that it works for you, Ben.

Yes, the options to keep the Timeline concerned with animated objects only is in the way for the baking of non-keyframe animations.

My best wishes.
