Can’t select points, edges or polygons when a polygonal object is in an combination of Array, Connect, and Subdivision Object.

I think I may have stumbled upon a bug but would really like to know if someone else is having this problem. I know that the a combination of putting a polygonal object as a child of an Array Object, then having the array be a child to an Connect Object, then having the Connect Object be a child of a Subdivision Surface works because Athanasio does it in this tutorial:

It’s Just when I do it, I can’t select any points, edges, or polygons in this hierarchy. When I remove any of the combination of the stack out, I can select again but when I have the combination that Athanasio has in the video it does not work for me.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Will N,

If I would have a scene file from you, I could say precisely what you are running into. Please share the file you describe here. Thanks. The critical point of your question is what is not in your description of the scene.

Please have a look here, is that similar? Is the radius of your Array zero?
Scene file and screen capture.

The points are not really in the Array results, these are the original points. As he explains, the axis needs to be in the center, and the points will be then equal to the result if set up as he did.

Does it make sense now? If not please share your file, and I will explore it.

Cheers

Thanks so much for your quick reply Dr. Sassi! I understand that the points are not in the array results, I’m just not able to see or select the the points of the polygonal object that is at the bottom of the hierarchy. I saw your video and I opened your project file and saw that you could select your points. I opened your file but I could not select the points. Are my settings off somehow? I’m using Cinema4d R20. Please view the video to see my problem:

Thanks!

Hi Will,

I have really no idea how to reproduce it. Really sorry. Since the file has no changes, I would exclude any parameter of the scene are the same.

Now I have to guess, not my favorite game, as it makes you test and might waste time on your end.

Have you restarted the computer including Cinema 4D? Then with a fresh unzipped copy of my file tried again.

Go to your preferences, zip the pref file (prf) and delete the original, restart Cinema 4D.
The same problem? If yes, you can delete the new pref file and unzip the old one, delete the zip file from the folder.

I have prepared an upload link, I can try if the pref file, while I use it, shows me more…

If all of that doesn’t help, please contact the support.
But let me try your prefs first.

Cheers

Will,

One of the methods to find the origin of the problem is exclusion. You are undoubtedly familiar with it.

Here is an alternative way to do what was done in the tutorial:
Screen capture and scene file.

Perhaps you can use this to finish the tutorial, and we try to figure out what happens one or the other way.

All the best

I really appreciate your help Dr. Sassi! I sent you my pref file and tried everything you mentioned above. Unfortunately the problem seems to persist even with the cloner method you shared via your second video. I can take the Connect layer with the Cloner as it’s child with the Cylinder as the CLoner’s child out of the Subdivision Surface to see the points as a work around for now. Thanks!

Hi Will,

Thanks for the file. The pref (prf) file created no effect as you experience it. I explored it extensively this morning.

But I found that if I go to different versions of Cinema 4D, I can, or I can’t reproduce it.

I will file a report about it.

I’m not sure if it makes at that point any sense to ask you to check with the support.
If you like to invest the time:
https://www.maxon.net/en-us/support/how-can-we-help/

The last file I have sent, MoGraph based, shows according to my testing the same results. I guess it does so on your side.

I hope it will be fixed soon.

Have a nice weekend

Thanks for your patience, Will.

Yes, fingers crossed this will be part of the next download.

For the time being, I want to offer two workarounds. Not what we expect to have for any artist (in terms of extra work), but if there is no other option right now, here are two suggestions:

Screen capture

Again, thanks for understanding and sharing files.

Enjoy your weekend
