Smoothing animation

Hello!

Still working on the same animation as in my other questions, and I’m trying to find a way to improve the quality/look of what I’m doing.  I’m bending these pieces of paper to look like they are being “peeled” off a surface, but the result sometimes looks a little chunky.
I’m wondering if I can make that better by
1/Increasing the subdiv of the geometry?
2/More joints?
3/Some kind of better weight blending?

Project : https://www.dropbox.com/s/nr8toak6bym2b7o/SingleTear_Curl.c4d?dl=0

Any suggestions most welcome!

Thanks!

Hi Alex,

To have a smooth animation with joints, all parts have to agree to that target.
The joints supply the motion, but they can bend edges.
The mesh has to be prepared in the way it can bend.
If the mesh is based on the final movement, it can have fewer polygons than the one in the file, and it will look better.
The ‘spine’ in the mesh, can be used to create a spline and the spline can be used as a source to convert Joints from.
In the files, I have used (01) your joints, and in the other file (02) I have straightened the joints. I was not sure if the given configuration was purposely. Either way, the new mesh works nicely. What I should have done in the video clip, to have both splines in the same z length.

Let me know if that worked.

Cheers

Sassi, you just blew my mind…This technique is amazing!!  I had never seen the Spline rail deformer used like that…So great, thanks so much, super clear!
Just one thing I’d like to understand better : what are your bind settings?  How important are those?

Thanks!!!

Thanks a lot for the feedback, Alex, very much appreciated.

There are two major options to bind, either on distance or visibility. For things like that, I would go with distance. The visibility-option is often more appropriate when joints are inside of a mesh, like a character. Because, Distance could mean that the area of the rips is then taken by the arms instead of a spine (standard standing pose, not T-Pose for that example). I wanted to give a hint here, in case the other option was set on for whatever reason.

I mentioned the Spine edge to joint, here is a little screen capture:

P.S.: Please have a look here (I couldn’t resist to set this up)
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/kR1q8zeawbmfFGKGnWibKooB3FJ8EKCS8kjIM7XuNA9
Perhaps set the Furl User Data to -360º and 360º for more flexibility.
The joints need to be baked if used in Unity.

P.S.2:
Tested with scale towards the end, as well as with Animation Clip, FBX Export. Re-import to C4D and imported to Unity.
