Hanging object from string

Hi, I am trying to drop a Christmas ornament from a piece of string. The ornament however swings around sporadically. It was recommended to use a ragdoll connector, which I’ve done. Is this the simplest way to set this up? I may have more objects than necessary to achieve the desired look.

Thanks!
Matt

Hi Matt,

There are certainly many ways to get this result, I mention that to keep your motivation to explore it active. I certainly have set up, each time I got this question, things a little bit different.

Here is my version of doing so, with the wanted Ragdoll included. I have simplified the set up, and I hope that comes close to what you need.

I would suggest as well to use a Friction Object. These Ornaments are super light weight and air can easily influence those.

Let me know if you need something else.

All the best

This is very realistic! Thank you so much Dr. Sassi. This setup will definitely help me with what I’m after.

Hey Dr. Sassi, sorry to bug you again! I was messing with this setup and just curious as to why you went with the route of using objects with vertex selections and tracer objects. Just seems much more complicated to set up? Is it just the fact that your setup provides more control? Also it is possible to set up the bulb so that the metal piece on top and the bulb itself are 2 separate objects? I tried this and the bulb was flying all over the place haha. Thanks again!!

Hi Matt,

First of all, you never “bug” me. Any question that is based on C4D is welcome.

Let me answer with two files:

Scene files
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/GaODg9Um8U7G4Pecmr68EzDh8q6059GPWdlxMp0bnEl

The first one (…_01.c4d) showcases three ways to “connect” an object to a spring. Just let it play and compare.

The second file (…_11.c4d) has the “hook” and the “sphere” separated. Please explore the parameters to get your idea of it.

Let me know if there is another question, I’m happy to look into it.

All the best

Ahhh this makes more sense having 2 springs as it adds to the realism of it. Quick question, is the Point Selection option only for soft bodies? I was not able to get that to work just messing around with it. In your first example (post #1), I was trying to figure out why you used point selections.

Thanks Dr. Sassi!

Hi Matt,

I would like to have a look at the file that doesn’t work for you.

Drag the point selection into the “yellow” set up for cube.6, and the behavior will also change. I have had created a copy, made it then editable, selected the points and saved that selection in a tag. This tag was then moved to the Primitive (vs polygon).

This should answer the question that points are not exclusively for soft selections.

Thanks Dr. Sassi. This made more sense to me smile I was messing around with it and changed which points were affected by the point selection tag. I can see how the behavior changes with each. Thanks again!
