Paint Through/Projection?

As per Maxon, the new R18/bodypaint is supposed to support projection painting.  We are running R18 studio.

I can’t figure out how to set it up.  Went through documentation, looking to paint like I do in Muxbox/Zbrush with simple paint through.  (which is why this is very exciting, I’ve been waiting for this feature for a million years)

Has anyone gotten this to work?  Or do you know the page/section in the documentation that references this?

“With projection painting enabled, you can paint onto a virtual glass plate over the model and subsequently project this painting onto the actual textures.”

Thanks guys.

Hi Nick,

I really had to check if I missed something. This is not a new feature in R18.

In a nutshell, it is activated with the small little Icon, see image.

It is a layer that can be activated and paint on, then confirmed or even deleted.

One of the main differences to the “direct object painting” is given that the stroke width stays the same (In screen pixels) and will applied to the object in the same way, if far away or close. With the direct painting the brush diameter stays the same in relation to the UV mesh or related object size.
The online manual shows this effect clearly.

Again, if I miss here something, please let me know. I happy to look in any specific question, or create a little one minute clip to get you running with this feature. (Edited)
All the best

Well, looks like I was wrong.  The way it was phrased to me seemed like a paint through option.

I’m familiar with the projection methods, they work great for edge clean ups.  Just tired of the copy from photoshop to cinema 4d to project imagery onto the object in the viewport, and then mask out what isn’t needed.

Do you have any other suggestions—- thanks for your help!

Thanks, Nick, for the reply.

I was just finishing uploading the little clip. Obviously you do not need it at all. Perhaps it helps someone else.

I checked as well the list of “New in R18” clips here, just to be sure. ;o)

The text you have in mind is on the linked page, the last entry, right?

Sounds like this question is also not leading to your targeted workflow: Have you worked with the Freeze 3D View option?
Save the result as “.psd”, after worked in Ps save it and with a RMC [right mouse click] on the BodyPaint 3D layer, texture>Merge Textures. Perhaps too many clicks either.

I guess via clip board Ps>BP3D is also too slow?

I tried to find some tutorials, but I can’t find any from Kai anymore, they were perhaps around a decade old and went into the “digital basement”.

======

Would that fit more your point? A refresh button, which might work only one way: Ps>BP3D.
Perhaps, then please [!] never hesitate to suggest those ideas!

Sorry if I wasn’t more of a help.
