Intersecting vertices During extrusions

I have been working on a very simple model based off one letter from Motext. I have started adding details to the model via extrusions of different faces and I keep running into issues on the edges of the model…they keep separating. (Yes I have the box checked for this not to happen) Upon further analyzes it seems the paths are overlapping creating what seems as separation…. At .35-1cm extrusion depths why am I seeing this issue on a relatively simple model?  I have fixed it; but down the road as this model becomes more complicated, I fear this could become an issue.

Hi Motion Design,

You might have an idea what these images try to show, as you work with it for a while.
I see only crossing lines, perhaps from the extrusion you mentioned. Guessing here …

For me, there is very little information, I have not even an idea what your steps were.
Long story short: I need a scene file. Images are sometimes nice, but most of the time
they make only sense if one has more background information, and a scene file is clearer.

Please reduced to the problem and without ANY 3rd-party stuff in it, thanks. :o)

All the best

Never mind I need to think out loud sometimes I guess lol….I adjusted the maximum angle while the extrude tool was “hot” this eliminated the issue completely. Thanks though for the speedy response….

Motion-Design,

Do I get the idea correctly that you would like to extrude the selected small “loop”?

If so, use the Extrude Tool [m~t] and set the Attribute Manager> Option> Maximum Angle to 120º or larger if needed. This works for the 3_lower.
This should result in an extrude without overlap.

The object “3” has a V shape in it and there it will work until the point of the spline (no a edge) will limit the extrusion. There I haven’t seen a solution so far, that would be quick. The spline in the file had in this area a problem, but I guess that is not typical for this question here. I would inspect the Splines or Polygons first in those areas and “weld” these points to have more space for the needed extrusion afterwards.

I have eliminated the points close to that V shape and the extrusion goes further.

Perhaps prepare the shapes in Illustrator with different stroke sizes, and outline those. Then import those and extrude only the depth and combine different “layers”.

P.S.: I saw your reply and it is in parts the same what I was going to suggest. I write while I go through the file (step by step)
So, going though the parts carefully, it took me a while.

You’re welcome, Motion Design.

I have added the Illustrator idea above as file. Perhaps that might work more to your liking.

ENJOY.
