Bevelling in R17

Recently upgraded all the way from 10.5 to R17 and having problems with bevel tool.  Previously I would’ve selected an edge with loop selection tool and bevelled it. This would’ve resulted in two new edges being created and automatically selected so that if I had wanted to I could bevel both of these etc etc.  Now however if I bevel a selected edge it creates the two new edges selects them AND every little edge between them making a second bevel impossible unless I reselect the two new edges and/or deselect all the little edges between them.  It used to be that I could quickly and simply keep on bevelling the resulting edges until I had the smooth curve I wanted.  This new way of doing things seems counter intuative.  Am I missing a simple checkbox that I can tick/untick so that bevel doesn’t select every new edge created just the two primary ones?

Hi AlexTomlinson47,

Changing tools without allowing for the old way can be annoying, I understand.

Since I have no image nor a scene file, it is difficult to say anything exactly. Let me try anyway.

The additional “selected” edges are called Miters. Are we talking about those? If you can’t quickly deselect them with a CMD+“Ring Selection” you might try this:

The current Bevel Tool allows for user shapes based on a “Spline” interface, whereby the Spline is half of a symmetrical shape. In this way, giving the right settings, sometimes (mostly) shapes can be achieved that would have required in the old one two or more steps.

I’m not aware on how to disable the “Miter[s]” edge activity after the use of the Bevel tool. Perhaps the support has an idea.

Perhaps a suggestion would lead to a relief of that:

All the best

Thanks for the reply but it’s not working for me. Sorry for not posting pictures previously. Here is a diagram to illustrate my gripe smile
A: The edge I want to bevel
B: The result in R17 after using the Bevel tool once.
C: The result I want, allowing me to bevel these two new edges for a further subdivision.

In the previous versions of C4D that I am used to C was the default result of a bevel and allowed me to quickly subdivide the object, again and again to get a smooth curve. Now the result is B which means I have to switch to the ring select tool to deselect these additional edges before continuing. This has overcomplicated what was a smooth workflow.  I can’t see the benefit of C4D selecting all of these new edges by default, I have never needed that and can;t imagine why anyone would in preference to the previous way of doing things which was logical.

Thanks, AlexTomlinson47, for the examples.

Of course, Cineversity is not the place to ask for any changes inside the software, that would be MAXON directly, e.g., the suggestion option mentioned above.

What I can do here is to showcase how I would do it. It is a one minute clip:

https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/VlXR2REOJ4OOvKUwQ2TL64nGpJoyhFsjV3r0WO7C9Q0?ref_=cd_ph_share_link_copy

I know that is only an example, and you will certainly find another one where the multi step method with the from to two edges will work better. But I can’t help you there. I checked how far the Slide Edge would work, given the option with “slide and add” an edge, but that might result in an extra step to move the new edge ...

I’m happy to look into an other example of course. In any way, the most success seems to the Suggestion Form. Which should be like this “A simple check box to have an option that “Miters” are not selected after the new Bevel is applied. Which sounds reasonable to me.

You’re welcome, AlexThomlinson47!

I hope the option can be included, as I know the feeling when things change and take a way something.

If there is anything else that you do often and where you need a new workflow for, let me know, hopefully I can find something.
