connecting artery for medical animation

I am attempting a cross section of arteries that will have a device traveling through them.

The problem that I am having is the ability to create the branching of the splines. I can sweep the splines
with the shape that I like but I can not connect the splines to have one single branching shape (like a tree).

I need to find a way of making and controlling a system of veins or arteries as on continues shape?. I need
anyones help with this and it will be greatly appreciated. Alternative methods to my problem are welcomed.

Thank you all in advance of all replies.

Gregory

I attached a simple illustrator example of what I am looking to accomplish.

Hi Gregory,

Thanks for the sketch. Unfortunately there is no option to make this with a Sweep [NURBS].

A little bit messy would be a Boole set up: first combine the outside [180ºRing+Sweep], then the inside and subtract the inside [Circle+Sweep]. However, I’m not a big fan of it.

.
I have attached a scene file that works with a core of the “Y” element. It is relatively quickly set up and from there you can Extrude [M~T] and connect others if needed.

I have left the steps and some other ideas in the file.

.
Perhaps lining up two cylinder objects and cut them (Knife), then delete what is not needed and deform them with “joints” would be perhaps the fastest method.

Let me know if you have an idea which method you like, and perhaps we can go from there.

All the best

Quick Workflow (not based on Sweep!)

Gregory,

I have recorded a one minute workflow here:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/o2Zz5TdLdK75W5PsiTj2mSfkPHBqBHCu8Lq5vVNmza8?ref_=cd_share_link_copy

The workflow has limitations, as the angle and size in the corners of the “Y” connections might overlap in certain combinations. So, test this and find the sweet spot for your work.

As it is pretty fast, I guess there is no problem to have a couple of test runs. If you have the option to use Cloth, you can add “thickness” on the fly, otherwise you need to extrude one time with “caps” on. Not a “biggy” to add, and cloth works great, see the other image. (not in the movie!)

Perhaps, you have a little time with the sculpting tools, to make it more organic…

I hope this work for you!

My best wishes for the project

Option 2

If you paint with the Pen Tool, you can Outline Select and use the Edge to Spline function.

The Spline might be cleaned up in the “Y” areas to avoid overlapping edges.

In an Extrude, set only one Cap to work.

Connect the result and use a SubDivision Surface.

See attached scene file.

Frame 00-56 are fine and then I showcase the problem if the points are too close, “Y”

Thank you so much for replying. I am trying to understand the files you sent. If I can begin to see how you set things up
in each sample and reproduce what you have done I will let you know what method I chose to use. I was somewhat confused
by your referencing the Extrude [M~T]?.

Again, thank you for your time and help

Hi Gregory,

Thanks for your feedback.

IF you do not move the mouse or a pen, you can press shortly the m key and then the t key, which is a short cut for the Extrude tool, in C4D lingo this is expressed as M~T. You can see that in the one minute clip as well, the white frame with the text that shows up, or as in the image below. Extrude is a function to move a selected polygon (-group) and creating at the same moment new polygons to leave the previous neighbor polygons in place. Or, to extrude an edge to a new polygon(-group). It is certainly one of the key modling functions and should be know, if one likes to work efficiently.

Please let me know what would work best for you and I’m happy to try to clear all questions that you might have. I guess the Quick Workflow idea might be the simples to get your result.

All the best

You are very welcome, Gregory.

If I have another idea, I will post it of course. ..and again, please “shoot” if you have any question.

My best wishes for your project.
