I’m cutting a cube with a boule and using an extruded object from an .ai spline to do so and everything is going extremely slowly. Thoughts on simplifying or make the system less bogey?

Without seeing your file, what can I say, high polygon count? (Ai files might have a high point count, not optimized, etc) Guessing is not really my preferred way. It takes too much time on both sides.
