Can Mograph clones interact with cloth?

Hi

I’m using R15.

I want to have lots of small rigid spheres moving around inside a larger cloth sphere. suddenly the small spheres explode outwards rupturing the balloon and the small spheres blow away.

I thought about using Mograph and clones (volume object) and animate them using an attractor etc and then make the attractor negative to explode the clones through the cloth sphere but I can’t get the clones to interact with the cloth - Is it possible - Can rigid body Mograph clones interact with cloth?

I can get a single sphere to interact with the cloth sphere by adding Cloth and rigid body tag to it but when the sphere is cloned, the clones go right through the cloth sphere without interacting with it at all.

Alternatively, I imagine I can use thinking particles with small particle geometry spheres. Use a volume emitter and animate the clones inside a cloth sphere and then make them fly out through the cloth. However my knowledge of thinking particles is limited in terms of getting them to interact with them.

Can anyone please help in terms of getting the clones to interact with Cloth objects or a tutorial getting particles/particle geometry to interact cloth.

Thanks.

Hi dmaxman,

What is your initial set up to this? The Cloth and the Dynamic—even if they could—would create perhaps a feedback loop in the possible interaction, or (again—if possible) would not show up correctly.

You can combine these two, but it is quite some work to fine tune the two systems. Just let some MoGraph spheres fall on a cloth sphere to get your experience with the system. :o)

If the “tear” part is what you are after, perhaps set up a dynamic MoGraph system and put a Cloth based Sphere over the MoGraph Collider Sphere, then disable the Sphere Dynamic Tag in the moment they are supposed to explode. For that short moment the Cloth based Sphere might not change a lot anyway—until the explosion takes over.

I assume that the spheres inside will explode with much more power than the “balloon” will be able to take, so the interaction is limited. It just tears them apart. Make a tear-map.

I have set up a little sketch, not fine-tuned at all, and I cached the MoGraph stuff first, and the tear part is manual. I love control over my scene, so I have not used the Attractor, as you can see, with dynamic, wind and turbulence I have so much more power over the scene.

All the best

Sassi

Thanks very much Dr Sassi

That’s along the lines of what I was trying to to but I couldn’t get the cloth sphere to interact with the spheres. Please have a look at my test file and let me know what I’m doing wrong (a cache problem, a setting I’ve missed?)?

Many Thanks.

Perfect, Dmaxman, thanks for the scene.

I cached the MoGraph Cloner with a MoGraph cache.

Then I placed the Cloth Collider from the child/clone to the Cloner Object. I moved the Cloth-Surface/Sphere below (not as child!) the Cloner Object, to have the hierarchy OK.

Should work!

All the best

Thanks Dr Sassi

It was the missing Mograph cache tag that stumped me. Once I added that and baked the cache everything works fine.

I’m glad I could support your project a little bit, dmaxman.

Again, I hope the visuals will stick in your clients mind.

Enjoy
