Movie playing thru stained glass window

Maybe it’s easier to just explain what I’m trying to do.  I want a movie (texture) to be projected thru a thin transparent rectangular box (not just a plane, it needs to have depth).  The box is transparent and has the movie texture applied to it.  I want to shine a spotlight thru it so fog or volumetric light would give the beautiful “stained glass window” effect on the fog and the ground, just with a movie instead of a still.

This is what I have so far.  It’s not right, but gives the idea.  The fog is just barely starting to show the movie on it, but I think that’s from the environment, rather than the volumetric light.

I’m wondering if I even need a frame, or if the alpha channel from the movie could act as the “lead” areas.  And I suspect it may get tricky projecting thru both sides of a transparent object, rather than just a plane.  Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Yes the movie can have the “black” areas for the lead. Have a look into the attached file “..._11.c4d”. I use here a little number-sequence to represent the movie.

The camera in the scene is purely for the camera-projection (see Texture Tag) and works in that way like a projector -as long as the light is on :o)

In a second scene file (inside the folder and named on the end “..._21.c4d”) I have introduced a little light for the “cube” as well. If you open then “..._31.c4d” you will find the same as “..._21.c4d”, but with Glow enabled. Without the glow (too extreme in the example, but to make a point, I find that the “glass” would miss something.

If the light should hit mainly the cube, in terms of size, follow the image that I have attached. There are other ways, but a projected rectangle/square from a non-orthogonal direction shows up that way.

I hope this will give you a base to create your own set up.

My best wishes.
