Dynamic Feathers and tube worms

I am creating a tube worm. I need either hairs symetrically on one dynamic spline or the feather object. As far as I can tell there is no way to get dynamics to apply to the feather object. The other issue is that I can’t seem to find a way to get the hairs to generate like a feather object on the dynamic spline. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks.

Hi Markparris,

Is the result similar to this image here?
http://www.taenos.com/en/fish-and-coral/wallpapers/Sabellastarte_sp-408-1280x800.jpg

The parts shouldn’t intersect with each other and be animated by the wind (based on your file)

My initial question, can you cache the spline information and go from there? (No idea if that leads to something, but my initial thought to [perhaps] limit the guess work.

Cheers

Sassi

Thanks for the idea, I will give that shot. If my end result looked anything like that I’d be pretty happy, but it is what I’m going for.

My question was aiming to get closer to your target. Talking about one of these “tongues” or many of those will make a difference. (I might be wrong to name them tongue, but for simplicity—I hope it’s OK)

With that in mind, my current idea to “solve” this would be based on Hair, as main “spine” for each of the tongues. In that way a certain dynamic will be available. As a side note, if you use the Hair with as many guides as you need these tongues, you can use the PoseMorph to create any animation. The initial set up plus the manipulations of Hair are just great for that.

Hair can take an object as hair. This can be scaled via Hair-material. The dynamics or animation that the hairs have, will transform the polygon object that is used. The polygon object might have even more options with shading.

Please check out the Pose Morph, the channels in the Hair Material (Frizz!) as well other options in Hair. Again the size of the Object is determine by the Thickness of the hair in the material. The options, perhaps even with wind or dynamics are certainly great.

All the best

so the best solution I found was to spline wrap a cylinder to a dynamic spline. I constrained the spline to an object to move it up and down in the tube. Then I selected the polygons on both sides of the cylinder to add the hair. The hair settings need to be messed with in order to get an accurate collision, but adjusting the hair stiffness and rest hold help.

I think I could also use the hair generate instance feature if I want more detail on the hairs to get closer to this look.

This was the look I was going for, and just one.

Nice that you found what you needed for your project, Markparris.

I asked about the final result, as we sometimes move here step by step progression. With the problem that each step might work by itself, but not for the next one.

Anyway, you got your result and that is all that counts :o)

Thanks for the update.

Have a great day

Thanks Sassi, Your help is greatly appreciated. I think if there is a reason that people come to this thread it will be because of the collision settings of the hair and how that is effected when attached to a spline vs. geometric object. It seems to respond better on a geometric object in my experiments.

Yes, Markparris, discussing options, and comparing these to ones target is certainly a value.
If you see it as “brainstorming” or as “problem-solving-process”—either way, it is a win for everyone. I believe highly that synergy leads to new solutions.

However, only you will finally know what precisely will fit to your target. I’m really glad that you explored it deep enough to find it.

Hair and the dynamics have a lot to offer, as you certainly know. As I get not tired to say, the combinations are the real power of C4D, just explore it.

Have a great day
